high-ish idle speed

Hello

What does it mean when the idle speed doesn't drop straight back below 1,000 rpm but sits at around 1,200 for a bit? I noticed this the other day, crawling along in a bit of traffic. 5 litre Griff.

and what does the horrid, sharp, metallic sound mean that I heard when I turned if off? Bit like that sound when people are trying to get a car to start that doesn't want to know and the starter makes that same noise

are you doing the diesel trick of just lifting the clutch to trundle along as that will make the revs in mine rise when you stop doing it it then falls back down to less than 1k?

mine also can be quite abrupt when you turn it off...

Mmmm, that could be it. I think I need to fiddle around with the pedals a bit. Thanks very much - very helpful. I expect it would also be helpful if I didn't have size 11 feet.

Its likely to be the stepper motor resetting, as it buzzes when it hits the end stops as the ignition goes off. Quite normal.

As with all things, there is a silver lining. Slightly higher idle = slightly less wear and tear on the cam lobes

Hi, it sounds like the first signs of the stepper motor staring to play up. Could try taking it out and giving it a clean first (look in the good old Steve Heath book if you have one). If that does not cure it you will have to eventually change the unit. Have just done mine on my Griff 430. It started to hang around 1500 as I came to a stop, then took time to just go down to 900-1000 but was lumpy. went through the cleaning process and it was a lot better on the first run out but went back thereafter. My Griff runs really sweetly at idle now (well as sweetly as a precat does, which is GREAT). All the best, Pete
