What oil ??

I am currently travelling in Italy, and struggling to find any Mobil 1, 15 / 50 motor oil.

Whats a good alternative that is suitable for my Griff engine ??

any advice gratefully rec'd.

Always use Silkolene Pro R 15/50 in mine, from Opie oils, with excellent results. Having said this can guarantee that somone with far more knowlege than me will be along shortly...!

Any 10-15w fully synthetic castrol/shell/valvoline etc would be fine..

So its OK to mix an alternative oil with the Mobil 1 thats already in there ??

Yes you can mix no problem,done it for years with lotus,cosworths,r5 turbos its all good..

So just to put my mind at rest, as long as I have fully synthetic, with either 10W 15W.....

What about the second number ( the '50') What does that represent ?? and what do I look for assuming I cannot get the 15W-50

40 or 50 referes to the thickness of the oil at certain temps,it wont matter which you use its only important if you live in a very cold climate..

The first viscosity number with the W is the Winter number and in your position doesn’t really matter. The second number is the viscosity at high temperature and it is this one that does matter, try and get a 50, the higher the number the thicker the oil at high temperature.

However if your just topping up then as long as you change it when you get home in reality it shouldn’t make that much difference for normal driving as long as you stay with synthetic.

Thanks guys. I managed to track down some 15W/50 at a Fiat dealership. I grabbed the last two litres they had in stock.
