HI lads where would be the best place to point a infra-red laser gun to get the best engine temp ,the engine block by the sensor or the rad/rad pipes as i think i am getting false reading on dash any help would be fanastic thanks paul

Having checked about using my new IR unit I would say the lower rad pipes appear to give a good indication of actual temp... The rubber or metal ones on the passenger side of the engine bay going to the top rad inlet..

Also, you might need to take care of the material that you're pointing at. An IR thermometer that I borrowed a while ago was calibrated for black surfaces, so shiny pipes were inaccurate.

Many thanks lads i am of to maplins to get one as i am getting a bit worried with the reading i am getting on the dash ,I will take areading and see how it pan,s out then i think i will get a new water temp sensor while i am at it many thanks again to all for the advice

I was using my IR gun today to set the modwise adjustable resister that i fitted inline with the original Landrover temp sensor as the tvr one reads whaever it feels like, usually nothing.
i think that the tvr sensor is in blind alley so not allways in the water flow so is unreliable.

I was measuring the black metal pipe to the rad top hose at 91/92degC normal idle hot, fans cut in at 93/94degC, swirl pot by the fan switch was about the same temperature, the rad bottom hose was a couple of degrees cooler, driving the car tonight the guage readings were @88degC driving, 92degC in traffic fans running.

If you set the half speed on the Modwise kit to around low 80's then you'll find the full speed hardly happens as it stems the temp rise.

Splitter seems to be worth about ten degrees in operation but more importantly it really helps drag temps down once you get on the move again.
