Help needed with door mirror

Decided today to try to tighten my vibrating driver's door mirror. I unscrewed the whole assembly from the door, checked the mount was fine, tightened the grub screw and tried to refit.
Problems.
When I try to screw the assembly back in place I get about 3 turns in then can go no further as the mirror fouls the door bodywork in front of the mirror. Needless to say the mirror is nowhere near fully seated (needed 6 turns to remove).
Can anybody spot the problem & tell me where I am going wrong.
Wish now I'd left well alone!
Any help gratefully received.

I'm having the exact same problem!! Checked the Steve heath guide and this issue is not really addressed. I'm wondering if it's cross-threaded??Problems.

Just checking the SH guide again and it appears the boss that unscrews from the door comes away from the mirror by undoing the grub screw.
I'm going to try putting the boss in tightly then attaching the mirror using the grub screw, should work??
