Wrestling with a rubber ring

Had a cracked main beam unit..bought a new pair from CT.

Simple enough to pull the old ones out...only held in with a rubber ring.

Putting the new ones in position and then getting the rubber ring back on however is a totally different matter!!

What's the secret??

Heat them up first, boiling water and then dry them and do it with the lamp and housing off the car.
