After a few months of almost fault free motoring I seem to have been hit hard all at once.
Checked the coolant, low so I put a litre of water in (service due in a month so not overly worried about antifreeze)
Checked the oil, low, very low in fact - it took 2 litres to get it back to near the maximum mark. A quick look underneath found the problem - the oil pressure sender is leaking from the thread (job for the workshop next month)
While the car was in the air I tightened the exhaust mountings up as I was getting some nasty vibrations through the chassis on occasion and the exhaust now looks to be sitting slightly askew.
Cleaned up the stepper motor (having found a spanner that fits perfectly)
This all took place last week in the few spare minutes I had in the evenings.
Today on a whim I went to the motorshow for a nose around. Made it as far as Uxridge (all of 2 miles) and as I drove through town the engine gave an almighty kick followed 30 seconds later by the engine dying. Fortunately I was moving and squeezed the car into the end of a layby. Turn the ignition and it immediately fires up.....and then dies again. Repeat 10 times....
On the next attempt the engine caught but wouldn't rev at least not at first. Continuously pumping the throttle kept if from dying and every 4th or 5th pump blipped the revs a bit. Then suddenly all is well - the engine revs cleanly and smoothly as if nothing had ever happened.
Being the daring sort I decided to head off to Birmingham anyway and for the best part of 200 miles - not a problem, absolutely perfect (including a drag with a Evo VIII FQ up to about 1.6 units so no loss of power...)
Just towards the end of the return journey and I get another almighty kick from the engine, only this time it just carries on. Fifteen minutes later as I go to pull away from some traffic lights again nothing - the engine carries on running but pumping the throttle does zip. Keep pumping and all of a sudden it comes back again.
Just been outside, checked it all over - everything seems ok. Fluids all as they should be. Electrical connections all tight.
My first guess was that the throttle pot has dirt on the track but I suspect it is more than that. Anyone got any ideas - or better still knows exactly what the problem is?
