Starter motor recommendations ?

Whilst I'm under the Griff (500) changing the engine mount, i think i'll change the starter as I think has suffered some heat soak and does the clicky-solenoid thing a few times (mainly when cold) before it will engage.

Where's best to source a starter ? Are there any choices or ones to be avoided ?

I'll take the opportunity to put in a heat shield too - is anything readily available or should i fabricate something ?

I fitted one of these, seems to do the job. Lighter, draws less current and cranks the engine faster.

i bought a rat sport one. i have one of those japenese starters with an adapter plate on another car and its tip top so this seemed like a good bet. also i may switch to boot mounted gel battery soon and reduced consumption will help the cause.

If the car is low milage, then my recommendation would be to take it apart and clean it (Brushes / Com etc), then WD40 it.

Update on this:

I ended up tracing my fault to a burnt relay buried inside the immobiliser, all sorted with a simple bypass.

But before I sussed it I paid £150.00 including postage for a Powerlite RAC 318 direct from Powerlite.

At the end of the day it's just a modified Denso gear reduction starter like I used to fit to forklift trucks.

When I found the immobiliser was the real problem I put the Powerlite RAC 318 on EBay and promptly sold it for £200.00.

TBH the Powerlite RAC 318 worked well but never really sounded right to me.

Some how I ended up with a Prestolite starter so I now have first hand experience of three starters.

1) The original starter (now resting in the shed)

2) The Powerlite RAC 318 starter (turned on EBay at a profit)

3) The Prestolite gear reduction starter sold for the Range Rover Classic (now cranking my Chim engine)

The clear winner for me is the Prestolite starter, it sounds super smooth and has massive cranking power.

The excellent Prestolite starter is available from Brookwell Land Rover Parts at £83.94 including VAT and postage.

I really wouldn't bother paying £150 - £200 for a Powerlite RAC 318.

Save your money and buy the better starter, buy the Prestolite one.
