help - steering problem - need to fix by Saturday Goodwood

A while back I pulled the lever to adjust the angle of the steering wheel. It sounded like something went ping or snapped and the wheel is no longer locked into place.

I have had a look at the Bible and, as suggested, took the cowling off but after that I got a bit lost. The Bible says '...you should see the pin. All that is needed is to push it back.' On my car, this doesn't really make sense. The spring loaded lever that the adjuster handle screws into goes backwards and forwards in the slot okay. Below that there is about an inch of something more like a knitting needle than a pin sticking out at right angles (so in line with the axles). This pin rests on quite a heavy spring that I assume tensions the wheel when it is being moved up and down.

I can't see what I am supposed to be sticking back in where. It almost looks like there is something missing but nothing fell out off the car and I don't understand why it worked okay before.

Any ideas gratefully received. I am not going to have time to get this fixed by someone who actually knows what they are doing before Saturday. A slight complication is that the car is twenty minute drive away so I can't really nip out and have another go.

Sorted, all on my own. What wasn't clear was that the wheel had to be moved up and down until it lined up with the pin...and then it slides straight in.
