500 clutch question

if talking torque figures then it should be fine for 340 to 350ft/lbs, but dont buy the cheapies advertised on flea bay, they`ll only last 5 minutes, get a borg and beck jobby, also dnb on here I believe had an uprated clutch that he bought from rob of v8developments.

Ive got one of those V8D Helix clutches, at over 500lbft of torque now and its slipping. There doesnt seem to be much if anything over the rating so I would say thats quite possibly over-stated as it was specced for 500lbft. Its only done 1800miles and most of those were running in.

So for a normally aspriated 500 should be fine and very well priced!

I have a Helix clutch from V8 Developments and it's been great so far (4000 miles).

But TBH it's not realy under a great deal of stress in my little 4.0HC, probably no more than 260lbft going through it (at the very most!!).

The Helix job isnt much/any more money than a standard unit so I would say it's excellent value and a no brainer for anyone needing a new clutch, even if they dont have a big HP car.

My original standard 4.0 litre clutch failed early in terms of milage (if not age), my guess is the pressure plate had gone soft, perhaps heat had affected it?

Any how, once the pressure plate goes soft the driven plate will wear out in no time at all.

The truth is 500lbft is an obsene amount of torque for any clutch, neal1980 pehaps you need something made for the drag strip mate.

But I expect that may make it un-drivable on the road?

As Clive says, I have a Helix from V8D. With a mere 350ftlbs, I have never had a problem with slip. (I was told the rating was up to 400ftlbs) Avoid ebay clutches (and anything that seems cheap) like the plague. It's a long story, but they generally aren't up to the job of a well tuned 500.

I would look at Superclutch as an option for 500ftlbs and above. They were helpful when I spoke to them, but I didn't need the performance of their clutches, so couldn't justify the additional expense over the the Helix.

Ditto here for the V8D Helix clutch, still going strong in my 315BHP Griff - the only problem being my left leg muscles are bigger than the right - the Helix being heavier duty than standard.

Totally agree and so would my brother
