Accessing main cabin fan unit

I understand from the bible that the main cabin fan unit is located in the front nearside wing, and is accessible from the headlight inspection cover, which I presume is the cover in the front wheel arch. Is this right, as it sounds a bit unlikely? There's another inspection panel on the wing inside the bonnet on the nearside. Could it be this one instead?

Wait a minute - that's the offside wing! Mine's in the n/s wing ('92 4.3) IN FRONT of the wheel. Access is via the headlamp hatch or the inner wing in front of the radiator/behind the lower grill. But it won't come out that way - for removal I think it has to come out of the headlamp pod hole.

I think the blower in the picture is for the driver compatrment only and is a simple fan and not conected to the main ventilation system. On my griff the heating system is on the N/S and is visible if you remove the glove box and appears to be mounted in the upper inner wing/bulkhead area above the battery. Although my car as air-con so maybe completely different.

That's a bit of an extreme way to access the driver footwell fan! Even the bible's way looks simpler than that!

It is the main one I'm after. I'll take the glove box out and have a mooch. If it's not there I guess it'll be furhter forward in the wing. If the damn thing worked, I'd be able to hear where it was!

Theres a hatch behind the Airflow meter, could this be the way in??

No, I've had a peek in there. All that does is gets you access above the fuse board, over the battery.

Did you go to Le Mans again this year, BB? I left it too late to book up. definitely for '05 though!

I think you're confusing early Griffs with later Griffs. The early ones had a single fan mounted, as the poster states, in the front nearside wing. However this was laughably inadequate, so in later models a second fan was added in the other position - wihch explains BBs picture.

And even later ones had a single fan but installed properly!

Starmist, as the Bible says the fan is mounted beneath the passenger headlamp.
I replaced mine last year.
I got it from a breakers yard (Vauxhall Nova, dead easy to remove from this as its mounted on top of the baulkhead,beneath windscreen.Cost £15)

You have to remove the inspection cover infront of the passenger front wheel( wheel off time),then remove the stabilising bracket ,carefully cut the sealant around the headlamp and remove the complete unit.
It does look like it wont come out, but it does.
The fan is mounted low down ,surrounded by a leather sheet,this is supposed to seperate the air before and after the fan.
Just make sure everything is made good before re-fitting the headlamp.

My 99 has the fan just by the side of the battery, just inside the flap, in the inner wing. You can actually spin it with your fingers. There is also a four way plug that comes "Un" plugged, very easy if you ahve been in that area.

Mine is different again. The main fan is mounted behind the glovebox. If the fan is not working it could be a problem with the heater control box thingy which is behind the dash. On mine you can see it by taking out one of the allegro vents and checking if there are any loose wires.

What you're looking at there is the heater matrix box, where the hot water goes around the matrix. The ari from the fan goes through this box before being distributed around the car. Dialling hot or cold routes the hot water through the matrix or not. Looking a bit closer on mine, (which is the same) I'm pretty convinced the actual fan is in the front left wing behind the headlight.

Ah yes, i can see the matrix pipes going into in now. Looking closer, mine is the same as david's, the fan is inside the wing, next to the battery.

That electrical connector on the front of the box (which looks like the wiring into the box) is actually the inertia fuel cut off switch (cuts the pump in the event of a front ender.
