Watched with interest the theory of lifting the bonnet catch to keep my 4.3 BV cooler and then tried it. It did not make a significant difference. I then had a look at my friends 5litre and noticed his cooling fans sound stronger and are fully enclosed. They also move a lot of air and cut in and out according to engine temperature. On the 4.3 they are weak sounding twin fans which are not shrouded and once on, can hold, but not reduce the temperature. This means they have to run all the time. Anyone know if its worth and even possible to upgrade to twin 5L shrouded fans. If it is are the fans special or off a production car.

Yes I did this, the shrouds make quite a difference, but the fans in particular are a lot more efficient. The early wiring did not cope with the later fans tho, just kept blowing the fuse. I didnt like adding a 40A fuse (even if that would be large enough) so added new relay & fuse in fuse box for fan2, and routed 2 new feeds. Old 2X pink to fan1, New 2X Pink/red to fan2. Fan1 controlled by swirl tank, fan2 controlled by switch in rad by outlet. Oh and nice led that goes red for fan1, yellow for fan2, orange for both...

The fan shrouds fit directly in place of the alloy plates which mount the early fans.

cheers Dave. Where did you get the fans from?

The same was done to mine about 11 yrs ago just before I bought it.

It was an unofficial BV and had the 500 fans fitted and an over-ride switch. It has never overheated.

The very late fans are off a Cerbera. Yes the later fans are more powerful but equally fans can degrade as they get old and the motors weaken/bearings stick.

I have the 2 speed fancontrol from Mod-wise, not only can you set the switch-on temps yourself, it also has a dedicated lead directly from the plus of the startermotor. This gives the two fans that extra bit of amps they need wich makes them run a bit faster. The original wiring can only deliver the minimal ammount of amps for the fans. This is also true for the headlights, there's a kit from Mod-wise that gives your headlights that extra bit of power.

Fred

PS I was the one that raised the bonnet, on mine it takes considerably longer when waiting for a trafficlight before the fans come on, so for me it works.

I'm not sure about this shrouded issue - my 4.3 has been upgraded to twin fans, each with a black plastic shroud, mounted to aluminium plates at the top and bottom edges of the rad - is this not the 500 arrangement? Pics any of you 500 owners?!

My fans (and I thought those of the 500) are manufactured by 'SPAL'. Best place to get these is direct from the importer 'Malcolm Phillips' in Somerset. Sory, I don't have the no. to hand. I did a web search for SPAL, got the details of the UK distributor for SPAL alarms (I think) and they passed me on to Malcolm who has sole rights for the fans. He's very helpful and can offer upgraded fans if you think your wiring will handle the increased current...

This makes me curious, I to have two fans made by Spal with a shroud, maybe mine has the 500 fans also. Is there someone who can show a photo of the 500 fans, or maybe the type.

Well mine look nothing like this. They have no shroud at all. Looks like this could be a very worthwhile mod.

Andy, while your online, what are the chassis guard plates you have in the profile of your Griff. are they behind the wheels covering the out riggers??

BB, sorry i missed you,

yes, they are triangular ally plates that clip onto the front outriggers to prevent them from getting sandblasted by cr*p of the road. 2mins to fit and remove, still room to check and clean the rigger if required.

plastic and s/steel fittings to prevent rust/damage.

good idea for yours i would have thought.

Peninsula do them.

could post a photo is required

cheers

Yes, thats what I did. But some of the Cerbs had 'mismatched' fans didn't look too closely at these, I got a pair that were the same as the later RV8 cars.

Note: getting rad in/out is a little trickier with these fans & shrouds. You may find it easier to fit fans with rad out, the rear of the fan motor doesn't have a lot of clearance to the cross member. It may be possible to fit shrouds then fans into shrouds, if you dont want to take rad out, since the bottom fixings are such a pain to get at I'd always take rad out
