Hi there, I am in the same boat at the moment with my Griff 4.3. The GKN diff is really worn and leaking oil. It has been sent off for refurb, but unfortunately needs replacement crownwheel & pinion. The options for me are a) spend absolutely megabucks on (if they can be found) replacement crownwheel & pinion - do NOT want to do this, b) find a good condition GKN diff and have that reconditioned, or c) go down thw BTR route? Bernie at CTS who has my diff has said that if we go the BTR route will need conversion mounting brackets etc, also there may be issues with the ratios on the BTR units. As you can see quite a dilema.

Are your spare GKN units OK? If so what would you want for one so as I can use the crownwheel etc?

All the best, Pete

Hi, we went from a GKN to BTR diff in the racer after being advised it was a straight swap. It did go (though can't remember if we used the GKN or BTR mounting brackets, but it was forced into place and so not ideal. It worked OK for a couple of seasons but snapped one of the brackets last time out!

Can you buy these conversion brackets from Bernie do you know??

Ta in advance

Dave

edit to add: I do have a spare 3.73 ratio diff, good condition but can't remeber if it's GKN or BTR!? E-mail if interested.

Hi Dave, I have now sorted my diff dilemma. John Reid at Grantura Eng had a mint used set of crownwheel/pinion for the GKN unit which I have bought for really reasonable money. He has sent this off to Bernie so he can complete my rebuild using my original unit. Regarding the brackets, he did say there were conversions available. I will be please to have my original GKN unit back, and hopefully installed by the end of the month. All the best, Pete

Thanks Pete. I'll give Bernie a ring - will save me having to make some bespoke brackets!!

i have a gkn diff, but do need to replace the bushes as i get some clonking from the rear on occasions.

i also have a 10,000 mile BTR spare, so am considering fitting that whilst the old gkn diff is "out" having the bushes replaced, so any information on the swap brackets would be most welcome.

Is it true the early diff has better gearing ,lower rpm at higher speeds..which is the early one..mine is on its way out ,the one with fins on a 96 Chimaera.
