I'm thinking about fitting a roll cage in my Griff. Has any one got any recommendations? Photos would be much appreciated.

Digga had one fitted when we used to sprint. He may be able to offer some help/info.

There just isn't enough room in a TVR to do the job properly, unless you are very short. IIRC the RAC recommendation was for 6" clearance above your helmet. Most of the hoops shown don't even have the clearance above the head. You need this clearance because in an accident things will stretch and distort a lot.

I would like to look at getting a full rollcage for the Chimaera, the sort of thing that Cerberas have but one that is not too intrusive in the cabin. i have done a search and and found a couple but to be honest they look a bit unwealdy.
so has any one done any reasearch into this subject?
Pictures would be great if you have them.
try speaking to andy robinson at www.robinson-race-cars.co.uk one of the best fabricators in the uk did our cage in the gt cup cerbera and also made suspension parts we needed, heavily into drag racing so you wont find safer or better!

regards andy(APM)
There was a good post on Jammy's thread but the thread got deleted :-( someone, Guillotine IIRC, had installed a cage well but the mods required were substantial and included lowering the seat.

Rollcentre do a nice one. But as per comments above, make sure you really want/need one. Good for track days. For road use, you lose a lot of sight through the rear miror (never that great to start with).

speaking of rear view.....did a see someone made a "widget" that lifted the mirror higher, on a swivel arm, so that you have a bit better view with roof off...

What do you want to do with the car ? if you intend to enter any regulated motorsport sport the cage will have to comply with the appropriate regs. If you are Sprinting or Hill Climbing in the modified classes you may be able to use a Q60 design , Q60 is basically a rear hoop with rear braces and a cross bar but it has to meet various design requirements one of which is you must be able to draw a line over your helmet to a substantial mass ( the engine). You can’t really do that in a Griff unless you are fairly short and have the seat low.

A Full cage is probably easier to fit in for a taller person but you will need to cut the dash and probably always run open because you will need a hoop over the driver’s head aka the Tuscan challenge cars unless you are short.

If you just want a rear hoop for track days various people make them some are better than others but I see no point in one that sits lower than your head and it needs to fit to something substantial and properly fabricated.

If you do plan to plan to enter anything that needs ROP go to a proper roll cage company and have one made otherwise you may be disappointed when the scrutineer first looks at it. A properly fabricated arrangement can be made so elements are demountable so you can take them off when not wearing a helmet.

Thanks for the posts. I don't plan on using my car for competition. The occasional track day is possible. I hadn't actually considered the disadvantages ie rear visibility and the fact that I might actually bump my head on it as I am quite tall. A hoop is all I want but it needs to look good and offer protection but not be intrusive. Please keep ideas coming....

looking at the cage in this racer its obvious you cant leave it in the car for road use and expect to use the folding roof.

How about something like this yellow one, if the highest hoop(s) (or is that oops?!?) could in someway be unbolted for road use, and put back on for trackdays perhaps, try talking this through with someone who builds cages for a living, like as suggested Andy Robinson. I am sure there are a number of people here who would like a road use and trackday solution to be developed. Unless anyone knows of one already ???

Whose car is that? Hoop/cage/bracing and wheels look impressive and it's got a new dash.

+1 (or will that be +2 Geoff? by friday;))

well at first glance, that looks exactly what we need ! Did it fit without dashboard mods?

Who makes this one or is it a special one-off? And the top hoop just un-bolts? Perfect.

Can it be done both sides incase you have a passenger I wonder?!

Can Andy post some details here?

Thanks.

I'm sure Andy will be along in a minute, but his was bespoke made by Caged

They make them to fit and to whatever spec you rquire, whether it be blue book or anything, it fits without affecting the dash and you can remove the front section leaving the rear roll bar should you want to.
you leave the car with them and they custom fit it...quoted me £1400 last September.

I have a Roll Centre Rear Cage in my one. Steve Heath had it designed and fitted. Photos of it in his book i beleive.

It does give some piece of mind in the event of an accident and i may one day ? do some mild competition in her.

Rear view is restricted however , particularly reversing and i do worry whats coming up behind me as the rear view through the mirror is very poor.!

Will post a pic or 2 of it when time.

All been said here I believe.

Mine (pics below) was done by caged who also did Marcus Clays.
Mine developed to...
Fit under roof entirely.
Front section/side impact removed quickly
Totally un-noticed when driving.
Conform to MSA regs for racing.

Raised hoop was also removeable and was intending to have this triangulated with a three legged hoop to rear drop bar, but ended up doing it properly by lowering the seat.
Seat needs to be mounted correctly for racing so bars were added to the chassis to mount the seat. These were lowered as much as possible to lower the seat around 3" (sliders removed)
I am 6'1" and you can see my head position in the pic below.

Not a big fan of the tower view cage as in my view its too narrow and without the seat securing and head issues, unless you 5'0" is possibly more dangerous.

ANY Roll over bar/ cage, needs to be designed totally including the following.
Drivers size/position
Seat position
type of harness

Caged would do this for you when you drop the car off.
They sit you in it.
Ask what you are doing (regs etc)
Takes some measurements
THEN
They'll design the cage.
In my case, being closed, I then went back for a sizing up before final construction.

Cheers
Andy
