Sorry to keep pestering you guys but..................furious

Now I can cope with Samson putting the allen bolts in the front diff mounts, even though I have bust have of my socket bars getting just the bottom two outsmash But the only way I am going to get a new pry bar on the top two is when the propshaft is out of the way.

Question - how the fcensoredk do you get the propshaft out! T5 box, GKN dif = propshaft just clearing the sensor on the input flange but there aint no way that its coming past the chassis rail just underneath the flange - so whats the secret guysconfused
Off to drown my sorrowsbeeranother day tomorrow. If I am finding this hard what the feck is the upper diff bush removal gonna be like when I get there - assuming I do of courserolleyes

Not had to do it on the Griff yet but on the S series you had to push the diff end up above the diff so you could move it backwards enough to get the gearbox end out.

The propshaft will come out (and go back in)! It's a matter of pushing the prop towards the gearbox then rotating the prop until you find just the right place to point the rear flange and it will just, and only just, slide past the chassis cross member. I'll be taking mine out over the weekend to so will look more closely at how I do it.

You'll have fun with the top bush. Other people have used various methods to get theirs out. As I've mentioned before, I cut an access panel above the diff, used an angle drill and hole saw to remove the rubber and centre sleeve of the mount, used a junior hacksaw to cut two slots in the outer sleeve and then drifted it out.

Undo the UJ at the front of the propshaft and tap it apart?

Hi Ian,

Not sure about the Prop Shaft but I have replaced my Upper Rear Bush with the Diff not removed, but dropped....

Basically, I went at it from the passenger-side it took me sometime to get it out but I made up a handle for a fine pitch hacksaw blade, put the radio on and tried to be as patient as I could be, patience is not my 'default setting' so it actually took me 4 goes at it to getting it out.

Between each 'go' I prepped and re-painted each inner-wheel arch which seemed to break up the job a little. ;-)

To get the new Bush in I bought some stainless stud bar, repair washers & nuts from B & Q and with the help of some deep sockets and lots of Washing Up Liquid managed to get it back in within 20 minutes.

Regards

Steve

No need..... The prop will come out by lifting the back end, and manipulating it, in between the diff and the chassissmilesmile

Erm....

Are you relating to his specific version with the trigger wheel & sensor in the way?

It sounds like Lunablack and me are saying the same thing, if this is a standard Griff 500 with T5 box and GKN diff. The speedo sensor does not need to be moved but the timing ring does, and that's done by pushing the propshaft away from the diff and manipulating the ring out, then manipulating the flange until you find the position where it will just slip past the chassis member.

Yessmile

Toothed speedo ring sandwiched between end of prop and diff input flange..... Speedo sensor on bracket above....

The prop will come out without splitting UJ's

Ok, I've just been into the garage and taken a few pictures to show that it can be done...

This is with a T5 gearbox, GKN diff, speedo timing ring between the prop/diff flanges.

1/ Remove four bolts from flanges.

2/Push the prop towards the gearbox, it has a sliding joint with maybe 50mm of travel. This will release the timing ring.

3/Slide out the timing ring.

4/ The prop flange should just clear the chassis member.

If you slide the prop out from the gearbox be prepared to catch any oil that runs out.
I'm only removing the diff so will try and leave the prop in place by tying it up.

Steve -thanks for response but I am getting the diff out for a bearing refresh. darkmatter - fantastic mate thank, again! I haven't tried yet as I have been setting up an airline in the garage, but that's a different story!! Does the sensor wheel just lift off or does it need some gently persuading?

If I do have a problem I will take the uj apart as per spends advice
Cheers

They frequently get stuck together, excess rust / thread lock.... Seems to be 2 schoold of thought on whether to clean & copper slip or leave good stiction where the prop clamps..

A few folks have had to replace the wheels because of damage caused tapping them off in situ where there is no room... You could try heat but as I mentioned its not a big deal to whack out the UJ, and for the cost you should be renewing them anyway whilst the prop is out.

Out of interest where are you going to be offering flights to?

Lol, I think it would probably be less complicated and easier to arrange. But...

There is progress. Got the prop out with just a soft hammer tap on the sensor and three of the four front diff mounting bolts out- the fourth will have to wait until I can tilt it enough to get the impact ratchet on it. Another bash tonight

Come on, keep up at the back! You started before me and my diff is already out and on it's way for a rebuildsmile

Anyway, glad to hear that you are making progress.

Job done, it's out and on the garage floor bowtie seriously misjudged the weight and dropped it on my faceyikes but a little bruise is a small price to pay.
Time spent setting up compressor and lines paid off and made breaking torque much easier.

Where have you taken your diff for the rebuild? What other jobs are you planning whilst it's out?

For me it's:

1 clean off all the crap, wire brush it down and por15 from gearbox back.
2 upgrade driveshafts
3 try to sort out handbrake
4 fuel filter and fuel lines changed

Any other suggestions whilst I'm in there?
