Inspired by Russell's OZ split rim rebuild thread, I am going to use the same guy who did the polishing (second time around) to do a full refurb on all four wheels, but we were discussing what I wanted in terms of finish so I have a couple of questions. I would just like to get back to what was the original finish so:

Are the centre detachable sections the same colour as the main wheel basket? On mine they are currently a slightly darker grey

The guy was asking if the main basket was the same 'sparkle silver' as on the OZ turbo wheels?

How was the centre cap originally held on, I just have a small counter sunk hex drive bolt.

Is the hexagonal centre nut (part of the centre cap) polished at all?

I have gone through the various books / mags that I have but they all look different, I guess as they have been refurbed differently over the years. I am sure that the ones on my car have been done at least once.

Any one have a good, close up picture of an original wheel, or know what the finishes were?

I have to decide on the paint at least, by Monday.

Thanks in advance. Peter

Its hard trying to find some original pictures.

I found this one showing the cap a different shade of silver. Also notice how the bolt holding the centre in is flush with the wheel.

Using this pic and my old one I think the nut has a brushed aluminium finish to it but the rest of the cap is the same as the rest of the wheel

Thanks Russ, you mentioned that yesterday, I see what you mean now. If someone has a spare I could get a set made up.

these wheels are total original unmolested (Toms Dad - Graham),

as you can see the the centre nut is polished up to the recess.

I ruined my retaining bolts as I had to tap them out, as my ex-girl freind tidied up the tool to undo them, presumably to the bin as it still hasn't serviced some 4 years on...... I got an engineering company to knock up a set, and tool from using my collection of knackered bolts for £50... a real old fashioned type place.

I spent weeks trying to find suitable bolts, but totally failed hence why I got them made up..... will take a pic when car back from garage... also think I have a spare in the car if I can find it.

Excellent, thanks, that is really very helpful. The only question then is, is the colour of the centre section slightly darker, its difficult to see on the photo, and does the main basket paint have a slight 'sparkle' to it ie what could conceivably be called sparkle silver.

Thanks again. Peter

I have just found some original pictures of the press cars with OZ wheels on page 268 and 269 of the TVR Griffith Story and the centres are definitely a slightly darker grey, maybe to better match the polished aluminium nut shapes in the centre? Don't know. Anyway, last bit is, does the original paint on the baskets look plain silver or does it have a sparkle?
