Hi all, I am trying to sort a strange problem with the electric mirrors on my 1992 4.3 Griff. When the switch is moved to operate the R/H mirror the joystick when moved about only makes the mirror go 'in and out', conversely when switch moved to operate L/H mirror and the joystick moved about the mirror only goes 'up and down'? I have looked up the Steve Heath book and found a diagram but not too helpful, the text mentions a relay but where this is I have no idea! Anyone suffered the same or can throw any light on the problem? You help would be appreciated. Regards, Pete

Ant.

The relay is in the drivers door Pete.
Have you had the mirrors off at all?

Hi Ant, yes, end of last Summer N/S mirror 'toadstool' broke so I had to take the mirror off then. I had the drivers door speaker out this morning and checked connections etc, will have to have a good look inside for the relay. Cheers Pete

it sounds like the mirror that is moving in and out is trying to move normally but is stuck on something and pulling the glass in. Take the glass out and see what happens when you operate it. Is the mechanism moving as it should?
With regards to the other mirror I had similar on my 92 griff. The joystick connections (both plugged into it and the internal) can become corroded. you need to take the door panel off to get at it and the relay. Clean up all connections, they are in a place were damp can get in if the glass to door seal is a little worn.
Hope this helps.

Neither of my mirrors were working up until last week so took both door cards off to investigate. On the passenger side some idiot prior to my ownership had run the wires for the mirror underneath the window runner rather than over the the top of it. The wires were therefore rubbing along the spiral coily thing that winds the windows, as the outer casing for this had also come off leaving it exposed to damage things. This had sheared 3 wires in half. Anyway all wires fixed back together and a new protector over the coily thing and the passenger mirror works but still no drivers mirror.

Everything looked ok on the drivers side so just cleaned up all the switch connections and low and behold they now both work.

for your problem i wonder if someone has had the wires off the back of the switch at some point and not put them back in the correct order.

I`d take both cards off and check condition of wiring and make sure they look ok and not messed about with. On the switching sides switch there are 6 wires going to it, these could be messed up position wise. I have a picture of the wires going to this switch. i will try and post it later and see if yours matches.

Hi Carsy, many thanks for both your very helpful messages, I think my problems lie there somewhere, the pic of the switch would be great, I appreciate your time and trouble. Regards, Pete
