just got back from a spin out and the griff started running rough on the way home.

it will seldom idle and seems to be running rich at low revs (up to 3k)

when i got out of the car and had a look at the exhaust for some tell tale signs, i noticed the boot was very black on both sides of the car.
i have cleaned the stepper motor(no effect), checked all the HT leads and now its too late to try it.

has anyone come accross this before ?

Might be your engine coolant temp. sender, just behind the top coolant hose out of the engine. Details, resistance test and part. no. in bible.

No guarantees though!

black boot update........

replaced spark plugs, leads, cap and rotor arm.

cleaned every connection i can see with wire wool and replaced.

started it up and it ran like a dream, just got back from a 10 mile spin and its even smooth in town now !!! which is unusual for an early griff 500 anyway !!

cost of parts.

NGK spark plugs 2.54 each
Plug lead set 14.59
distributer cap 12.31
rotor arm 7.24
plus the dreaded came to £63.99 plus two hours of my time.
Also cleaned the air filter and reoiled it with enough cleaner and oil to do it every service for a while at £10 all in.

Try doing that in an Evo or similar and see how much change would be left in your pocket!!!

The same happened to mine last year, and the back end was a nightmare to clean after!

the emissions are fine now so no black boot.
checked the CO and Lambda readings on MOT machine this afternoon and everything is OK, but i still have a slightly noisy cam/follower,

i have noticed after a severe thrashing it makes more noise so i may try some different oil to the Mobil 1 0-40 that is in it now

Castrol RS is one popular choice.
