Who's had an engine rebuild, then ?
Discussion
Just got that call that everyone dreads, while the Griffs in for it's first service while I've had it. Guys down at Austec have advised me I need an engine rebuild
I thought power had tailed off, but put it down to getting close to service time. Turns out pressure in all but one cylinder too low, not making full power by about 40 bhp, diagnosis is will probably only get worse. Still under warranty, but I don't think it does me any good unless something were to actually go bang.
So who's had a rebuild and about how much did it cost ?

Taraka rebuild at TVR Power, although I hear they're pretty booked up at the moment. £2500 + VAt for a rebuild, proper balance, recut valve seats, Taraka cam, enlarged plenum, solid lifters, etc. Have a look on their website (www.tvrpower.co.uk/5.taraka.php), as they have a breakdown of the costs, and if you don't want the upgrades it will be substantially cheaper. Do a forum search on 'taraka' or 'takara' as everyone insists on mis-spelling it for owners reports.
Don't be put off by the 4.3 rebuild costs at V8D, I think you'll find that isn't just a straight forward rebuild. They are good guys and are normally very competitive in pricing. Speak to them about your exact requirements and get a price, you could buy an exchange engine for less than is being banded around.

I was gonna say that!
Hey Razzle,
I had a similar diagnosis at Austec, low pressure on some cylinders and down on power, cheapest option in my case was a new bottom end from V8D. Had the bigger airflow meter, better ducting and MA magic aswell, makes a big difference but now the injectors are struggling to keep up with the improved airflow. Nothing that can't be fixed with sufficiently deep pockets, unfortunately mine are of the shallow variety at the moment.
If you want to know the costs mail me via my profile.

Had a little longer chat with Mike at Austec tonight (who to be fair broke the news as gently as you could hope for) when I picked her up - rebuild costs at V8D estimated at no change from 4K (know their work is highly regarded), and replacement engine costs almost the same. Will definitely find out what the TVR Power guys are quoting too.
Might need a day or two before I do though, as am currently wanting to go outside & beat the Griff with a big twig, Basil Fawlty style.

Hope you've got a good warranty.
Which engine is it?
