temp gauge problem

Hi to all. I've just come back from a long run in the Griffith and the temp gauge has decided to pack up, intermitantly. Kind of scary not knowing what going on in this heat!! Sometimes it reads nothing at all, othertimes it seems ok. I'm assuming it is a sensor problem. Here's the thing, I'm a real turkey when it comes to anything mechanical. Has anyone changed a sensor (and possibly a gauge!) and if so, can a real muppet attempt it, or is it worth shipping down to the local pros to check out?

I had exactly the same thing happen to Wol. Driving along, all of a sudden, engine temp drops on gauge, then rises, then drops. The fans still kept cutting in at the same times (you get a Zen sense of when they should cut in).

Joolz had a play, replaced sensor, everything hunky dory.
