I've got a '97 500, it's got what I think is an ACT y-piece, and some unknown quad-exit exhaust. It sounds outrageous but what I want is more pops and bangs on the overrun, any suggestions?

Thanks.

Ant.

In all seriousness my old chim 400 was not too bad on over run when the exhaust had been sleeved. If you get rid of the pr-cats that will help, Also running on the best grade of fuel you can helps. It was great on warm days just get the revs up in a low gear and lift off cloud9

Remove the cats as stated and that makes a big difference! This will also help with your under bonnet temps.

I have a pre cat and the pops n bangs are nothing compared to the AJP or the S6 cars. Its more of a muted burble with the ocasional faint pop. Nice but personally i would also like a bit more. I think to get the best effect out of the Rv8 cars you have to have the box sleeved.

Our Griff has no rear silencer, and it'll pop and bang all day long.

Lift off the throttle, then gently put some back on and it'll pop, bang and crackle for ages. Just takes a little practice. smile

Get plenty from mine, as many who have followed me on here will confirm.
Straight through exhaust, pre cats removed, main cat still present. MA did actually set the fuelling for pops and bangs when he set the car up.
Great fun thumbup

Not strictly true. It's in the garage loft. wink

ETA - The above was a line from the missus when a TVR specialist noted the car didn't have a silencer.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have no idea what exhaust is currently on the car (it's some quad exhaust with very small silencers) so I'm not sure if it's sleeved or not. I have noticed I get a few pops and bangs on the over run and between shifts when the car is properly hot, and like you say, a small amount of trailing throttle helps.

Sounds like this anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUdkX1ZLtDU&fea...

It's great under low speed tunnels... Gets a bit aggravating on very long European runs though...

Pops and bangs are caused by two things:

- a leaking exhaust allowing oxygen into the hot exhaust gas mix

- the Ecu not cutting fuel in overrun condition

To make them happen you'll either need to loosen some bolts on your exhaust (not recommended), or get a remap to suit. Mine runs an emerald Ecu, and if I run minimal advance and a little fuel on the overrun, this introduces a little fuel late in the cycle, and ignites it shortly before the exhaust valve opens. If you want to you can pretty much make it pop like an ajp, though it is annoying after a while, so I personally run a compromise map, do it pops when you're driving hard, but not much under light loads.

The fact your car doesn't pop may suggest that it's been remapped before for efficient fuelling, or maybe the ignition timing is off.
