A mate of mine is after a grif, having had one years ago he asked me for advice. But mine was a year old and that was 1997..(I think)
What do you get for about £15k ie mileage condition. I know you get a lot more Chim for the same money but I guess the grif will hold the money best. Are they cheap to run and being older now are they reliable (with in reason)
Also whats the best way to get the 500 as loud as possible, mine was annoying as it was catted and under warranty and prior to the current exhaust mods. I had a 350i before and it sounded much better.

£15k should get you a decent one.

They are reliable as long as they have been used and cared for. There's a buyers guide on PH which is a good starting point.

At this age rust in the outriggers is common but is straightforward to fix. All the components will be pretty old now if they haven't been replaced so it will really depend on the way it's been maintained by previous owners.

Cheap? Well that all depends, mine has just needed servicing and some minor things repaired. But I've done some of the repairs myself that might have been quite costly just because of the labour.

It also depends if your friend is going to be happy with a 'standard' car if he starts down the upgrade path then the sky's the limit.

The support for Griffs and Chims is very good from the various independents and there have been lots of developments to improve the reliability and performance of these cars.

As to the sound, there are a number of options for exhaust modifications which can increase/improve the sound. I went for new act manifolds, sports cats and a cherry bomb exhaust which I really like but is. Abut noisy for track days. I'm in Berkshire near Wokingham If you want to come and listen have a look around.

The best noise will always be a Precat griff. Hands down.

Buy on condition as always , regardless of mileage.

Is 15 his max?

+1 here, my 4.3 pre-cat had done 72K when I bought it, but had an excellent chassis, the engine had been looked after and she ran well. I have gone right over the car in the last 18 months of ownership and done everything that needed doing, which apart from the diff rebuild I did myself. They are easy to service and if good quality parts and materials are used will reward you with reliabilty. Also make sure the electrics are checked and any dodgy connections or previous bodges are repaired/replaced. Also, more important than anything - DRIVE AND ENJOY, that is what they are all about. After some careful consideration, I guess I'm in the market for a Griff. When I've sold my car and bike, I'll be set.

I have a few questions - looks like the market is stronger than it has been for a while - list today looking examples are listed between £25-£30k. Are they selling at this value? Is there likely to be much room for negotiation on price?

While I don't use my car everyday, the runs I do (about twice a month) are a ~500 mile roundtrip. If I do get a Griff, is it likely to be suitable or am I going to go insane with wind noise or have an anxiety attack every time I need to rely on our performing a longer run?

As any TVR owner will tell you, buy on condition, but you should get a good late example for £25k without any leaks, rattles or excessive wind noise. They are no BMW convertible, but you can certainly use a fully sorted Griff for any journey. Good luck with your search.
