i've changed both UJ, t tighened the spring adjustment on the rack as far as i can (any tighter and the steering wont self centre) , but still get a little slop around dead centre. I can move the steering wheel approx 4mm either side, so straight ahead feels a little vague.

I can't make up my mind where it comes from.......despite fiddling in the garage for an hour today

IS there anywhere in the column this slop can come from, or is it likely just a 20 year old rack?

Steve,
I had the same problem not so long ago. Mine was the nylon/steel knuckle under the plastic column cowl(just behind the steering wheel).
If you take off the cowl you can see it,especially when you tilt the wheel fully down. Rotate the wheel from side to side and check the play.
I ended up getting a Chimp full coulmn off a very late car and stripped and swapped the internals. HTH

yes, the manual rack

I cant feel any play in the rack itself, so looking elsewhere.

I did manage to properly fubar the rack tensioner though, it was stuck tight, slipped with the spanner and buggered the threads, so cant get the lock ring back on....anyone got a spare before i chase breakers?

good call, I will check that tonight.

If im right, the column looks like a astra/vectra column, so a 25 quid one form the breakers should yield the parts i need...any ideas which column tvr used?

Think its a two piece cavalier column, so will be a rare find in good nick at the breakers i would imagine?

I had to replace the intermediate shaft - the short length between the 2 UJs - because I couldn't get rid of some play after replacing both UJs

Are you sure its not there?

the UJ were a snug fit onto the splines, and ive torqued the nuts properly, cant detect any movement there, but I will recheck.

its only 3mm at the wheel, which could just be inherent in the whole assembly....but i'd like it gone if i can

I'm interested in this as well, got 2 racks and replaced the 2 UJ's, and I also have a bit of play in centre. I didn't realise there was another UJ inside the column, can that part be bought on it's own? Mine is a manual 96.

Just found this on the wedge pages - not sure if it is relevant, but I have the same up/down movement felt through my steering - and this seems like a good way to go:

with my pas setup, ive changed the rack, and both UJ, so the movement i have (which is rotational) is definately in the column
