I am about to change my manual rack for a powered version and need a bit of advice as the Search Engine is still down.

1) Can I remove the manual and then fit the power-rack without removing the Y-piece?

2) What is the Land Rover part no. for the pump and what model did it come from?

3) I believe there is a reputable power-steering refurbishing company in the Bristol/Bath area? I know about Kiley Clinton but was looking for someone closer to home.

Any advice will be appreciated.

i fitted a standard tvr hydraulic power rack to mine but used a saxo electric pump instead of a mechanical pump cos they dont fit on the pre serps. it works great. just getting hold of a good ps rack is the problem

You need.............

P/S rack
Land Rover pump, (any L/R indie)
Shorter splined shaft from wheel arch to rack
Different UJ at rack end
Outer ally plate and bolts that brace the front of the pump on to the housing
Transfer pully to pump
New set of hoses
Plastic reservoir and mounting bracket

To fit rack, easy option............

Remove exhaust and Y piece
Remove manual rack, (easy peasy)
Remove track rods, (joint below bellows)
Drop rack in to engine bay and connect.
Fit all pipes, track rods etc
Fit Y piece and exhaust.

Thanks Peter for advice. I didn't know about the ali bracing piece for the pump, what exactly is it?
There seem to be dozens of different pumps listed. Do I just need one for a Range Rover Classic 3.9 Efi?
There are also dozens of different part nos for reservoirs. Anyone got one for sale?
Have got all the other parts, just need the above.
Thanks

Useful link:
fleabay link to PAS pump

You can get the Pas rack in through the drivers side wheel arch (just!) with the Y piece in place, but the time it will take you twisting it, turning it, rotating it...cussing it, you may as well remove the Y piece.

Hamish, thanks for eBay link. Would still like to know where to get the mounting plate, TVR or Range Rover?

Try my local indie for advice, I'm fairly certain they must be a L/R item.

I fitted power steering to a V8S and imho the electrical pump is a far better option, one less hose for a start as pump and reservoir are combined. If its a pre cat don't even bother with the mechanical pump there are so many vee belt pulley variations it's unbelievable. I know I have an extensive collection none of which fits!

On a pre-serp the reseviour and pump can be combined (as in a Wedge) by utilising an SD1 pump, which is located at the bottom left hand side of the engine which runs from the crank pulley.
