Some swine has had a go at my driver's side wing mirror whilst the car was parked in town and the metal inside is now snapped. It's the cast alloy bit which allows the mirror to swivel that has gone. The mirror is now resting down on the door panel and damaging the paint so I need to do something about it.
Does anyone know if this is fixable or do I need a new one? I've contacted a few breakers and the best I can get is £120 inc delivery which seems pretty steep considering I will have to respray it on top of that. I know they come off a Citroen CX but a quick search on French ebay seems to suggest the CX ones are all manual; can I swap the guts between the two mirrors (about 70 Euro inc shipping)?
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Simon

Hi Simon,
Is it the mushroom that has gone? I believe they are designed to be the weak link in the system. From memory they are held to the door using a grub screw onto a bobbin and the mirror chassis connects at the top with allen bolt and spring to give the clicking motion. Mine broke a while back and I managed to get a replacement for about £10 from racetech direct. When mine broke I took the speaker out and managed to disconnect the elctrics which will let you take the mirror off the car and drive around without it dangling.
Regards
Mark

The part which is broken is the metal inside the mirror carcass which swivels on the top of this mushroom part.
Racetech sell the mushroom but not the bit I need. They do offer a whole passenger side manual mirror that you can take thee carcass out of but they only have passenger ones and can't get driver's side.
Thanks for the tip on the wiring. I'll try that later as I want to go to the regional TVRCC meet tonight.
I am 95% sure that the manual and electric mounts are the same. Once you have the mirror off take a photo of the actual break if you can, it sounds like the actual mirror internal frame broke rather than the common break that is found more often in the mushroom.
It is *possible* that a break in the frame could be fixed with an appropriate epoxy or similar - bit of a long shot, but worth considering.

Apparently there is a Citreon CX specialist that can likely help, his name is Stan Platt, I googled him and found his number 01274 683848... have not dealt with him personally but he is worth a try.
Good luck!
Also, I did find a good thread with instructions and photos of the various bits:

This thread is brilliant! I hadn't thought of fixing it that way. I'd just concluded it wasn't easily weldable and given up. Think that thread will save me a few pennies. Cheers! The most complete link for a comprehensive repair for mirrors.

Great ... if your a tvr club member
There you go the money you save on that fix alone would be worth the membership fee ..... and you'd get a free magazine thrown in as well
Just renewed my membership. TVRCC and PH forums work well together. SPRINT magazine has some brilliant illustrative photographs and expert analysis of engineering inovations etc (see ECUmate) All well written.
Comprehensive advertising lists of all major TVR service and repair garages. These are the good guys that keep all of us on the road and ensure the good health, and survival of the TVR legacy. Sprint also includes fulsome lists of national, international and local TVR sporting and social activities. Long live TVRCC and PH.
Note. Andrew T. TVRCC did this fine topic.
