petrol leak question

Out on Saturday - went over large hole in road - then petrol smell - stopped - petrol pouring out from underneath - called AA - they said the handbrake cable was "tied" to the pipe from petrol tank to the pump and had been rubbing and eventually worn through. He said it looked like it had been like that since manufacture - if so poor design - anyone else experienced this? (92 4.3 Griff)?

Yes - astounding isn't it? Hardly takes a genius to spot the inevitable and very dangerous consequences. Why yours and mine haven't been spotted and addressed during service/sales/MOT, I simply can't understand. Anyone clamping the fuel pipe to change the fuel filter should spot it. It really P's me off - it's that kind of design (and subsequent) 'oversight' that leads to the reputation for unreliability/horror stories

On mine the handbrake cable was pull-tied to the wishbone, so that every time the wishbone moved, the cable chafed the fuel pipe. Fortunately mine has only chafed the outer layer and I've reinforced the fuel pipe. By placing a section of flexi water pipe over the fuel hose, and removing the pull ties, I hope to avoid further damage. It's worth checking where the cable rub the wishbones too - the cable sheathing goes, letting water into the cable, and the coating on the wishbones goes too.

Did the AA man repair or replace? When I looked, replacement looked like a tank out job.

Mr AA Man could not fix it - I had to be piggy backed home on a truck. He also suggested a tank out job, however my garage (David Gerald) have fixed it without the need to take out the tank.

Bluetack's a wonderful product isn't it!! (Only kidding - or am I?)
