I've looked through previous comments on the subject of spark plugs and they all refer to the NGK plug. Has anyone every tried a different brand of plug - if so how did it perform and can you post details of the plug?

The reason for asking? The NGKs don't always last the distance between servicing. I've had a few now that have let go after just 4 or 5K miles

How are they failing? Anything unusual about the engine?

NGK B7ECS are recommended, should be changed at 5K or less.

The car develops a misfire which is cured by replacing the plugs. This has only happened two or three times in the last five years, but getting hold of replacements is always a pain - perhaps I should keep hold of a spare set.

The thing is that I can't help but feel that spark plugs should last the distance, when service intervals are every 6K miles shouldn't the plugs last that long? Is it the intense heat that causes them to fail?

How do plugs look like when you take them out? Running the wrong mixture could foul the plugs or over heat them.

The plugs look like the engine is running a little rich, but maybe that's down to the short journey I ran before inspecting them?

I (and a few others) had problems like this using NGK's on Harleys, especially iron head ones. If you used Champions, no problem!

Never could suss that one out, in the end I bought an Evo engined one (well two, actually), and used Champion plugs (which are actually what the Harley branded ones are, but, you guessed it, cheaper).

The Dutch main agent is recommending solely (all engines) Nippon Denso's, but I have to look up the exact specs.

In my case one plug was faulty within 10K KM so indeed at about 6 K mls. Also the leads had worn badly, but no idea how long they were on the car.
Any advise on the leads (other brands than originals from Rover?)? Or just change them every once in a while as I read earlier.

I find Magnecor leads to be the best. I'm sure there will be a stockist in the Netherlands.
