Hi all,
at first please excuse my english. Am from Germany (as if this could be an excuse ;-), but hope so)
Have bought a Griff 4.3 from 93 some weeks ago. Phantastic Car(also called the flying sauna as i allready read in this forum) but that´s not really a problem for me.
My Prob is the water temperature which increases up to the beginning of the "red area" when driving in town or standing in "stau" (trffic jam). Sure, then the vents start to run (have two of them) and cool down a litte bit. But they don´t cool down under the white line of the temperature instrument.
Since i don´t believe that to high water temperature (and then oil temperature) is really good for the engine i would be very happy to now whether this is normal for a griff (f.e. because the instrument shows a false temperature) or if is better to build in another thermostate which starts the vents at lower temperature.
When running the car on the "autobahn" (highway) the water temperature is constantly between the middle of the temperature instrument and the white line. And somehow i believe that this could be the perfect temperature for the car.
The second thing is that (especially when having a high water temperature) the cars rpm vary between 500 and 1000 and i also had it that the engine suddenly stopped. The car was checked by one of the two existing TVR Dealers in Germany before i bought it and he said that everything is absolutely ok.
Sometimes it also happens that i stop the engine (for buying red wine at a gas station f.e. ;-)) and after some minutes i start the car and the rpm is 2000. After some seconds it goes down to 1000 but in between it varies between 2000 and 1000.

Good Morning Germany, there are lots of 'posts' regarding overheating and 'searching' through previous discussions using "otter switch" may help. I'm not an expert on this subject but I have noticed that many people are not happy with the level of cooling.
I think there are different temperature settings of otter switch that you can install - meaning you can get the switch to start the fans (not vents) earlier than the normal 92degrees, some people have installed additional manual switches to run the fans when they want. I have also read that when the fans 'kick in' the revs can rise.
If I'm reading you correctly you may also be describing another common problem with the revs rising at 'tick over' i.e. no load on you engine. The 'stepper motor' (do another search on this) is in the rear of the plenum and this controls the amount of air entering the engine, and a dirty stepper motor can cause the engine revs to fluctuate. You may also be descibing the effect of the 'choke' or pre-injector that will add more revs to your car at start up.
Again, I'm no expert - definately use the 'search' and in no time you will see the common problems repeating themselves..

Steves "Bible" is sold out, unfortunately. Have had some interesting contacts in the while, but the problem of everheating doesn´t seem to be something poeple can agree about.
There seem to be very different ways to solve it. I for myself will use more effective fans (probably two-speed fans) and a thermostate which opens at 86 degrees celsius. No Oilcooler ! Allthough this might not be an ideal water temperature i think that the griffs engine oil will still be about 100 degrees celsius with 80-90 degrees of water temperature. And since the engine was not built for racing is personally think that it might feel pretty well with lower temperatures.
Let`s see what happens. I wouldn`t like to change it before 300.000 km. That´s my personal aim driving my griff as an "everdays car".

Another couple of things you might want to consider, there is a product called 'Water Wetter' or something similar which is an additive to the coolant keeping the temperature lower.... and people have had problems actually filling the cooling system properly, i.e. getting enough water in - one solution was to find the highest hose (somewhere on the top of the engine) and filling it there, therefor ensuring the system is full.
