Running out of Ideas!!
Discussion
Hi!
I've got 96 griff500 which is giving me a bit of a headache at the momemt. The problem i;ve been having has been going on for over a year now and i really want to get it sorted.
symtoms: misfires or cuts out(stone dead) totally random(eg cold, hot, idle, accelerating).
on all occassions it will start up stright away afterwards, sometimes pior to it misfiring you can smell fuel and when restarting you get alittle black smoke out of the back.
I have left it running when it is misfiring for a minute and it does not go back to normal until you restart.
sometimes the car will do 100 miles without problem ,other times acouple of problems in afew miles.
It has 2 or 3 times hit a early rev limiter 5000rpm but this is over the period of 2 years(might be unrelated) and sometimes the idle is a little slow to settle down when pulling up (not very often)
Actions i have taken to try a cure the prolem are:
clean stepper motor
clean all electrical connections(i think)
clean earth points
check injector joints near to plenum (95/96 common problem with the loom, apparently)
changed coil, leads, ignition mod, rotor arm , dizz cap, temp sensor, lamda sensor
sorry to drone on but this is my last try before i hand it over to the experts
thanks for any advice!!!

sounds like a fueling prob to me alan,
check the the injectors are not stuck open, the pressure reg is set correctly (and stable).
too much fuel will make it misfire (on one or more) and excess fuel will burn off as black smoke.
i'd take it to Mark adams. he's TOP at diagnosing fueling/firing issues and is VERY reasonable. he has rolling roads in Cheltenham and surrey.
but i guess any GOOD dealer should be able to sort it.

Thanks for you replies,
I will be taking it to Mark in the near furture as i have bought a new smooth intake pipe and i also want the air flow meter changing mark will hopefully remap it for me.
Will he have something that would read and fault codes that the ECU stores? as when it is running ok it flys and knowing my luck it won't do it while its on the rolling road!!

What about the Vacum Advance pipe from Plenum to Distributer, Can this cause running problems too!! can come loose at the Distrib end.
helps when cruising but cant remember why!
sure i may have read it before on here but cant remember for sure so may be leading you down the garden path.
prehaps someone more in the KNOW can explain better

There are some things you might try just in case, but to be honest in your situation I'd have taken it to the experts long ago. It's no fun driving a sick car, and you never know what other damage you may be causing. For instance if you have cats, they may not be so healthy any more.
If you can get the problem to happen from time to time then I'd stick a NOID diagnostic light in one of the injector lines and a passive strobe in the king lead. These may show whether the fuel and/or ignition is playing up when the problems occur. Try tweaking the connection to the coolant temp sensor and see if the problem comes/goes with that. Wire a direct feed to the pump, if it still happens then this rules out the entire fuel pump power supply, which is a common cause of intermittant running problems. Replace the plugs and see if the problem goes away for a while. This might be a clue that the engine is out of tune and fouling the plugs. Locate the trigger wire from the dizzy to the ECU (lone black wire running along the top of the near side rocker cover) and make sure it is well separated from the plug leads. Check the connections to the resister in this wire up by the bulkhead, check the resister itself is not breaing down when it gets hot. Look for any possible air leaks in the vac lines to the bake servo, dizzy and fuel pressure regulator as well as the breather hoses. Check for ECU fault codes. Check for the ECU 'I've been reset' fault code to see whether it is losing its power supply. Check the fuel pressure ....
The list goes on and on. But as I say, if I were you I would hand it over to a TVR specialist as you will get it fixed quicker, probably cheaper by the time you've replaced loads of bits that didn't need to be replaced, and with less risk of damaging something else along the way. Often, problems like this turn out to be caused by a combination of several minor faults and can be extremely difficult for an inexperienced mechanic to track down. When you go to the specialists you aren't just paying for somebody to hold the spanner, you're buying years of experience and knowledge. Make use of it.
