Cam replacement....
Discussion
Hi chaps,
Griff is running like a bag of spanners (has done since i bought it 5 months ago) and following having spent 3K on it, i am now taking it to the dealer for a tune but i have a feeling they are going to tell me that it needs a cam change. Anyone had this done? how much did it cost? what cam should i use for smoothest running and is there anything else i should have replaced while they are 'in there'??
Cheers,
Lig.

Ask around at the specialist that post on here. Also do search of previous threads for cams, it does come up quiet often.
A fair ball-park price, at an independant, for a cam change should be around the £500-800 mark IMHE. Suck eggs time, just in case, the cam followers should always be changed for new at the same time.

This is a minefield of opinions as regards cam specs.
I went for a 285 piper cam from RPI wih all gaskets and seals, plus new followers with a new vernier timing chain.
The parts cost £350 plus consumables (engine oil, silicon, antifreeze)
I would think the labour rate would be £300 plus the dreaded.
It took me about 10 hours in the garage but would be a good couple of hours quicker with a ramp!!
Search the forums for cams, but mine pulls well all the way through the rev range and the standard cam was lazy until 3000 rpm so its a lot more driveable.
Some say the mc1 cam is good for power but i am unsure about its delivery of torque.
Even er indoors noticed the difference

How many miles has your engine done? If it's loads and it could probably do with a good all round freshen up, TVR Power's Taraka conversion is good value for money. £2500+ VAT for a full rebuild, and rebalance including a new cam, solid lifters, rockers, and an opened out plenum and 70mm throttle body + chip. You can opt not to have the plenum work which should save you £600 odd. Have a look on their site where there is a breakdown of the costs.
