Had the top of my engine rebuilt by Tower View,

218 cam
larger injectors
ACT twin Plenham with silicone air intake
uprated airflow meter
MA chip and remap
magnacore leads

However, after the rolling road it started to misfire and compression is down on one cylinder.

So looks like new short engine.

But which one? probably from John Eales, as thats who Tower View use and it has one of his cams.(but maybe V8D but lead time is 9 weeks)

I have already decided to go down this route instead of fixing it cos I was taking a gamble on an 80k engine anyway.

So, I really want the 5.3 but am I asking for trouble or just great fun?

Speak to Steve at Guglielmi Motorsport in Daventry. They do a PTP uprated short engine. I'm very satisfied with the results.

If you are determined to go for a big bore, you might as well go for the 5.3, but as James said, talk to TVR Power. They do a full engine strip and rebuild with new shells and rings, with a Taraka cam and enlarged plenum for £2500 + VAT. Obviously you won't need the cam or plenum works, so it should be much cheaper.

I was in the same boat with mine - I wanted more power, but with an 80k engine, wanted to be sure it could handle the extra load.

Decided to go with the 5.1, the 5.3 is really for sprints and hill climbs, totally nuts but in short bursts. Spoke to Jamie at Power and it would be a good option but I don't like the cut down pistons that are used by TVR in the 5ltr and getting it re-worked is only a half measure, and its still a rebuilt original engine with pistons that have done 83k miles!

So a full blown new John Eales 5.1 short engine (with heads) should get near 350bhp, that'll do nicely.

Good choice to go with the JE engine. Have you gone for one with the gated sump?

if you don't mind me asking, whats the 'ball park' price to the JE 5.1 (I assume they aren't wildcat heads ?)

John Eales short 5 litre is £2750 plus vat and the 5.2 is £3150 plus vat,Ihave just bough a 4.6 short engine off him for £1450 plus vat for my RR, all his engines are built from new parts and fully balanced. I think the delivery was about £40.
He seems like a nice bloke he told me how to make up the plates so that I can pressure test rover blocks to test for leaky liners,as I now have 4 of them kicking around.
He also advised me not to re-liner to 96 mm on a road car as they will not stand any detination.

like it dropping off the cliff at 4K5rpm

Back to the original topic similar thing happened to my little 4ltr . I needed the heads/top end etc doing but just had to get the bottom end rebuilt at the same time as it was getting a bit leggy, turned out that it was still pristine at 90K, but I couldn't take the chance of something going pop.
Interesting the 218 still is a cam of choice, no complaints from me on that front. I find in mine with short overlap, early exhaust closure, it rarely pops and bangs , but it goes like feck .

With the larger capacity engines you benefit from more than just the extra CCs for example the bore is 96mm so the valves have more clearance, infact the torque increase from 5.0L to 5.3 is suprising.
And heres some hot of the press news. Rob (v8racing) now has 5.5 L Rover engines available.

Anybody for a 5.5 ? i would love to see the torque curve of that.

I do love these threads even though i'm not in the engine building business.

5.5 liters sounds like a hell of an achievement, looking forward to finding how well they go. You'd have thought the tuning options for such a mature engine would have been pretty well exhausted by now but you guys seem to keep coming up with new advances.
