Having cleaned the stepper motor and changed the temperature sensor the car has been running much worse.
The worst problem is that when you turn the key it makes a funny noise for a second or so which sounds like you have still got the key turned as if it is being turned over. Yes - I am waiting until the fuel pump has primed!
It is going into Adrian Venn soon (when he gets the wishbones form the factory) so I'll get him to look at it if the problem still exists.
If it ain't broke don't fix it springs to mind????
Many thanks for any assistance.

Anyone know what this might be?
It only affects the first second or so but it is a concern. It didn't do it before. It has only happened during the last week or so and didn't start directly after changing the stepper motor/temp sensor.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you find that the stepper motor sometimes makes a noise - the sort of "kkkk" that Victor Borge used to do for a comma (Phonetic Punctuation).

If so, is it this sort of noise.

I used to find that the stepper motor would make this noise if I put the key in the ignition then removed it without starting - the Battyman said it was just the stepper resetting....

So, take the stepper out, clean again and re-insert.
I'll try it. Hopefully it'll be that simple.
Thanks Beano.

PS - it makes the noise immediately after the engine turns over.

Is it possible it might be the hydraulic lifters taking a few seconds to pressurise and take up the slack?

Could it be that the starter solenoid is sticking while engaged? Can be dangerous if it doesn't eventually unstick!

its hard to tell a noise without listening to it, the fact you have cleaned the stepper motor offen dose not relate to this, their is always somethink else (past experience) as starmist states this could be your hyd lifters when did you last change the oil? whithout actualy listening to it its a needle in a haystack senario.

this DOES sound like the stepper motor.

when the igntion is turned on, the ECU checks all then sets the stepper to allow enough air in to start/run/idle.

its kind of a buzz/whir from the back of the block (obviously) for around 2 secs and is COMPLETELY NORMAL!

get someone to turn on the ignition while you listen under the bonnet.

You could just unplug the stepper to see if its the noise.I run mine without it connected. You have to be a bit clever with a cold start though, not too much throttle !

If it is normal how's come it has only started to happen in the last 4 or 5 weeks and not during the previous 12 months.
I'll have a listen tonight.
Thanks for all the help.
