Sloppy gearchange

I have a pre cat griff with the rover gearbox. The gearchange has suddenly become very sloppy. Is this a problem with the remote linkage or something more serious?

Much more serious, it's the driver losing his touch. Take off the Sovereigns, it'll make yer hand lighter.

Yeah, I've just taken mine apart after I lost reverse, 1st and 5th.

When you remove the gearstick you'll find that there should be a metal ball inside a plastic cover - they can wear out so check that, you can get a new one from David Geralds for a tenner.

The other problem may be the spring that makes the stick return to the centre when you move it in neutral, again a cheap part which I'm sure David Gerald's will have.

It could be a broken centreing spring, or it could be the ball joint. The metal ball on the end of the gearstick fits into a plastic ball housing, which in turn is fitted into a steel lever, which in turn is part of the remote linkage which sits on top of the gearbox.

Both failures mean that you have to remove the centre console - and if it's the spring, then you can replace this from inside the car. If it's the plastic joint, then you need to fit this from inside the car, but fit a circlip from underneath the car - it's a pig of a job, but possible (I've done it). BTW, While you're under there, grease the remote linkage (difficult to get at, but well worth it)and it will feel like a different car when you next drive it. I got the parts I needed from David Geralds - next day. Excellent service! They said that you need to drop the exhaust to do this job, but you don't.
