Anything I stick in the boot end up stinking of exhaust. It drives me nuts!!!!!!

Also as posted before by other having the roof on and windows down sucks fumes into the cabin.

I've searched and read all the threads like this one about making the scoops to pressurise the boot http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Being an early car I don't have the holes in the floor to scoop the air into.
I have fitted a new boot seal and this made no difference. If its worth noting I don't have the vents/speakers in the rear bulkhead like most other cars have it seems.
What can I do to cure this? Seriously its the one thing i HATE about the car!! Has anyone managed to sort this on a precat?

Ant.

Make sure the back ligjts are sealed from the outside, and also replace the boot seal.
Check the condition of the injectors to make it run and burn better.....
The smell is hydrocarbons.

Boot seal is brand new as mentioned above. Will have a look to replace light seals too.
Car runs clean, well did at last MOT anyway.

Have you tried taping up the boot lid edge with duct tape seal it to see if the smell is coming in from there?

The holes can be added and the scoop fitted. I believe a small boot lip spoiler will also help. I think the airflow lifts the boot lid and opening the windows creates a lower pressure in the cabin pulling the fumes into the boot and through to the cabin.
The smell can also come in via the reg plate.
Also there are vents at the bottom of the folding roof that can be blocked off or unblocked, whichever helps
Lengthening the exhaust pipes can help too

The tape thing is a great idea I'll do a tester involving that biggrin

Will check the other bits too.

Has anyone cut the holes in the boot before?

I haven't, but the guys who are refurbing it have. They have taken the tank out and the car is off the chassis, so quite involved, but I dont see why it couldnt be done chassis in situ, tank would have to come out though.

ooops , didnt see that bit about the new seal.

Dont worry about the actual foam seal on the lights, make sure there is a line of sealant around the perimeter of the back lights.

Also worth getting in the boot (either in bright sunlight or under a strong indoor light) and make sure it is actually sealing.
Make sure you trust the person who has the job of letting you back out !!!!!!

I share your pain OP. It's REALLY annoying. Roof up with windows closed is fine, as is anything roof off so it's definitely a pressure issue.

Drilling the holes seems drastic but if I ever get round to a body off tidy up i will be having them done. Lengthened exhausts just doesn't look right and farting about with the seals is an endless spiral of niggling frustration in my experience hehe

There is also a gap/tunnel over the top of the rear wheel arches and can be open into the cabin. Stick your hand up over the wheel arch and see of there is a gap. I pushed some foam in to seal and stop fumes coming into the cabin.

I had a similar problem and cured it by adjusting the boot lid to close harder on the boot seal
