best sealer for timing chest and water pump?

It says you put the timing chest gasket on dry (it has that black line seal already on it) and I assume you do the same with the water pump... But then it says add sealer to the bolts... Whats the best to use?.. I have some RTV black silicone stuff but what was on there before has set quite firm in the threads not like a plyable silicon... any thoughts?.. Cheers smile

Thread sealer (eg Loctite 542)... if you look at the holes in the block a couple of the tappings (on the long bolts) go into the water passages. Its also common practice to coat the bolt stems with sealant so that if there are any little seeps the bolt shoulders don't end up rusting.

So you put the pump gasket on dry as well?... I'm always tempted with the Hilomar :rolleyes

Actualy just checked and we have some Loctite 577... that looks good smile
