Cooling fans + poor power delivery?
Discussion
Not posted in a while as the Griff has been running great until last Friday.
First thing I've noticed, the cooling fans are not coming on. I have the Mid-wise two stage fan kit plus the override switch. Fans run OK with the override switch.
Not had chance to look into this yet but this evening I noticed that the power delivery is all over the place.
Idle is fine from cold and hot but when on the power sometimes it's fine and other times it gives 50% / 75% back to 50% then fine again.
Could these two things be related? Seems strange that two separate issues would happen at the same time!
Anyone else had similar?
I'll pop the ECUMate on it tomorrow to see if I have any fault codes.

If the power is varying so erratically during load and running conditions I'd initially check the intake pipe between the MAF & plenum for splits/loose letting sudden air into the system, then maybe fuel pressure issue or a suspect power supply lead or earth maybe causing both issues. Well for sure we know where and what you will be doing this weekend!

Checked coolant and its same as always.
Reducing the temp dials on the two stage fans made them work. I'm thinking maybe the cold weather is keeping the temp probs cooler so they are not kicking in until a higher actual temp. I've left the dials a little lower and all ok again.
As for the power, I haven't a clue. ECUmate lights up but doesn't display anything. I've tried different switch on routines but just no info displayed.
Mr Poxon, I may need to try yours!
It run fine for the hour I was out in it today, just the odd blip of the throttle had a delay in response. Possible dodgy fuel?

That seems strange that your ECU mate is not displaying anything... I am sure mine displays some text even before I connect it to the diag port. More than welcome to borrow mine fella.Reducing the temp dials on the two stage fans made them work. You should not have to adjust the controls, they are on the output of the rad. What temps are you seeing?
On the lower dial it was set to 70 and came on when the dash showed 75 - 80. Then last week it didn't switch on I turned the di down to 60 and it comes on at 75 - 80 again. Higher setting hasn't changed though. davetherave1970 said:
Cheers Matt. Would you mind bringing it along on the 13th?
Yeah no worries, you may want to txt me the night before to remind me though! I normally keep it in the car but I have taken it out recently as water has been finding it's way into the boot. Would be interesting to connect your ECUMate into my car and see if it works.
I have had the same engine performance issue for 8 months or so. Changed fuel pump, plug leads, cleaned all earths inc under body, checked intake pipe, checked with/without vacuum, checked all connections for ignition wiring, cannot solve the problem so would be pleased to hear if you have. Simon
Trust me you will know if you have a glitchy/failing TPS with the Lucas ECU if you move the throttle onto the worn part of the TPS (track) while on a steady throttle the RPM will fall like a sack of s
t until you move the throttle on to a good part of the TPS (track) if at any point the ECU sees an open circuit on the TPS (worn track/damaged) the engine will die until the ECU see's a signal from the TPS again (or you move your foot)
I found this one out about 6 months after purchasing my car and it was very temperature dependent and failed to show up off the car and before the fault code readers for the CUX Lucas ECU was widely available

Well I'm a little further with this now thank to Matt Poxon's loan of his ECU mate. It is a great bit of kit, just mine seems to have stopped working. Steve H has offered to sort it out for me, thank you Steve.
I have two fault code reports: -
1 - Code 23 - Throttle Pot Fault
2 - Code 32 - Airflow mismatch - TPOT high MAF low
I think the two are related and its a faulty throttle pot.
Are they easy to change DIY or should I book it in?

Throttle Pot is easy to change its bolted onto the end of the throttle spindle on the plenum. remove two screws, disconnect plug in lead and replace.
Excellent.I'll have a look in the week. Any pics?
I really should dig out the bible and have a look shouldn't I?
Anyone advise on Part number and place to buy?
