Roof strut rattle

I did both of the above but used just one washer behind the lower bracket. I made sure the bolt through the rear boot panel was at top of its access hole (slot). It's a lot easier to do if there are two of you. The trick is to eliminate all movement in the joint when the strut is locked. Given the bad state of the road surfaces around my way every little jolt was causing the joints to rattle and it was getting on my nerves.
But now, joy of joys, I've got the dreaded fault code 48. You cure one thing and the next fault in the 'you'll never fix me sucker' queue pops it little head up.

I adjusted with a washer to give more tension on the struts which helps but on rough roads the joints can flex and hence rattle. Where the 2 struts lock against each other there is a small piece of rubber to stop this. I found over time the rubber compresses so its paper thin and no longer works. I replaced the old rubber pads - cut up some bicycle rubber inner tube and stuck on with evostick. Rattles all gone.
