Ohlins suspension
Discussion
Hi,
Has anyone fitted Ohlins shocks and springs? I've spoken at length to one of the blokes who helped to develop the settings for a Griff and his reasons why they are better than the cheaper alternatives make sense. A mate has also driven a Griff on Ohlins and he reckons it was the best Griff he's driven. I don't mind treating my car to swan bits and pieces as it's a keeper, but I'd be interested in the opinion of anyone who's driven an Ohlins equipped car for a period of time.
Thanks.
Glyn

I have ohlins on my 4.5 cerb and they are great. My car is set up for track days (by the previous owner) and she handles like she is on rails.what I love about my set up is its not harsh on normal roads unlike some I have used in the past. You can get them rebuilt and checked plus they seem to last....mine have been on for many years and would clean up to look like new.worth the extra cash in my book if yours is a keeper

I have had a few Ohlins products before, but it has always been for bikes such as steering dampers and the like, overall the items are of a high qualitiy.
In the biking world they are precivered as being a top notch range and are a respected upgrade from factory spec.
However I have never driven a car with them so can not comment weather they are a better than say Nitrons or Gaz Golds etc.

I have often wondered about Ohlins ever since reading the PH article on the car that went to Sweden to be setup on their test rig. Unfortunately TVR Centre in Barnet no longer exist as far as I am aware.

Was the bloke you spoke to involved in that original setup. I would be very interested to see if anyone has the original setting from the Griff that went on the rig.
There is a guy here who has fitted Ohlins:

Yes, it's Giles himself that I have been talking to - he drinks in the pub I frequent when in England. He and Ohlins still have the final set-up info, which is what I'm looking at investing in. It's not cheap (best part of £3000 http://www.pistonheads.com/tvr/griffith/ohlins.htm

) but, as with most things, I guess you get what you pay for. However, it would be nice to get some feedback from a user.GlynMo said:

That is great news that the final setup info has not been lost. I did email Ohlins a while ago asking if they still had the setup info and if they knew of any companies offering the package but I did not hear back. Who is Giles working for now?

Giles still works for himself, but on a smaller scale now. His website is http://www.gilescooperautomotive.co.uk/. If you're interested in the suspension package, I'm sure he'd help to make sure the right kit is supplied. I'm just waiting for some info on the bushes and spring rates before ordering.I agree you get what you pay for. 3k is steep but Ohlins have a great reputation and the fact the someone has taken the time to work with the manufacturer and set the car up properly is great selling point.
The price is steep partly because of the quality but also because the shockers are made to order, which raises the question of a discount if a few kits were ordered at once.

Ah OK I didn't realise that he worked for himself, glad to hear he is still in business. I would be very interested in some further details on the suspension package. I think I will have to start saving! The price is steep partly because of the quality but also because the shockers are made to order, which raises the question of a discount if a few kits were ordered at once.

I've had ohlins on mine for a very long time now. Cost me £1600 (not fitted) at the time (which I think was a good deal)
And I was sold on he fact that they had been tuned for the car, that Sweden Test rig). Steve Howard (ex Thamse Valley Racing) fitted them for me, sourced them.
at the time I had to buy new ones anyway, my old dampers were knackered, so, as I was keeping the car for ever, the extra £400 over nitrons (at he time) seemed worth it.
Can't believe they are £3000 now though!!

And what do you think of the ride, handling, comfort etc? Have you had to have them overhauled or rebuilt? Have you driven/ridden in Griffs equipped with other shocks and, if so, how did you think they compared? As a long time user, your opinion is valuable. And I was sold on he fact that they had been tuned for the car, that Sweden Test rig). well. To me they were definitely worth it and better than the nitrons (others) available at the time, have been in quite a few differently set up griffs and they feel really planted on a bumpby b road. (ie the set up means back works with front, geometry religiously checked helps to, as do tyre pressures)But that was only, at the time, £400 pounds more..!

In the end I went nitron 3 ways because of an offer I couldn't refuse...
Did someone cut a remote res off some Gaz adjustables and leave it in your bed? It'd be interesting to see if some other companies would get a Griff on their rig to set up some, I keep hearing good stories about KW, although one bad one as well!

LOL no, financial incentive. I was looking at between £3k and £4.5K for my preferred choices (incuding Eibach springs). It'd be interesting to see if some other companies would get a Griff on their rig to set up some, I keep hearing good stories about KW, although one bad one as well!
Nitron, Penske, Intrax and Ohlins shoxs have all done specific development for TVR's over the years.
