I am keen to have a close look at a Surrey Roof before deciding whether to get one or go for a split roof.

Anyone with one going top be at CPOP on Saturday?

or live local to either Leatherhead or Crawley that would not mind showing me theirs.

Cheers
Brian

Roger will be there, and hopefully Mrs FFG's car will be there and hence the surrey roof.

I have one on my Griff. Its been all around Europe and subjected to some fairly serious weather, and its 100% waterproof.

I can maybe send you a few pics if you wish ?

Its ideal for touring, and my solid roof panle remains intact (but stays in my garage as it has not been used since I got the Surrey roof).

Hi Bomb,
That would be great - thx

I an keen to see a side on shot of a car with the roof fitted and also a close up showing the finish on the edges that run along to tops of the windows.

Initially I was thinking split roof but that will not end up cheap as I don't want to cut my current panel and new ones ain't cheap by the time they are cut and recovered. Starting to lean in the direction of the surrey now.

Hi Brian - will be there with mine on Saturday, don't have a Surrey Roof but do have a very neat split roof conversion courtesy of the previous owner. You're very welome to come and have a look. I'm doing the Dream Rides event so you can find me over there.

The proposed split roof that is being worked on will be competitive to the surrey and will be supplied as new/complete so your original will not be cut. Having seen both I will be buying a split one.

I'm not going to CPOP but...I have one of Roger's surrey roofs and haven't used my targa pannel since. One point which the split roof guys haven't made is that Roger's surrey top will fit behind the seats, even in mine with a roll bar. Once the pannel is out of the way you realise what a massive boot the Griff has. I agree the shape isn't quite the same as the targa pannel (it is flat rather than convex) also if you are tall I think that you may hit your head on the support struts (Im 5'10" and I have a few inches spare) but it does solve most of the problems with the solid targa pannel. As an engineer I am actually quite surprised that TVR didn't investigate this or the split roof in the first place. Before I had it, it was pretty embarassing having to unload everything from the boot and jiggle the pannel in before re-loading everything.

Having seen both, what's your reasoning for going the split over the Surrey ?

I've got an S&D split roof that I don't use and may sell for the right price. Its only been used a couple of times so almost brand new. I used it once only.
We've got one surrey roof and I'm going to get another as I find it much more user friendly.

I will do this and post pics for you. My Surrey roof is a couple of years old, and had been around Europe twice. Its been in use since the day I rec'd it, so you can judge for yourself the quality and durability when you see the pics. I am off this weekend for a couple of weeks tour around the UK - I like to get my moneys worth out my 'stuff' !!

Watch this space......

The Surrey Roof in its compact, folded position.

The detail of the strut. Knurled handle giving good grip. High quality materials.

The opened up roof - Struts have been opened and 'tensioned'.

Close up of the corner where it meets the windscreen and window frame.

Close up of the 'fit' of the frame to the rear roof section.

Side view of the roof line.

General view of the roof line (and my wheelie bins)

Close up of the windo 'UP'. wind flap on the inside.

Window Up - View along the window top. Wind flap inside.

The 'wind flap' is a top idea. After nearly 8 years of ownership, I've stripped and rebuilt the suspension, pulled out and replaced the engine, replaced the ECU and wiring, replaced the diff, moved the battery to the boot (and numerous other things)...

.... but I still can't adjust the frigging driver and passenger windows so that they meet the roof!!!!!

The flap may be in or out of the window. When its raining, the flap tucked in ensures the water runs down the window, and keeps the thing waterproof.

I have also found it slightly keeps the noise down:Wind roar and 'Zort noise. ( being fully de-catted).

With the flap outside you get a bit of air into the cabin.

Nice to have the choice......( although its a small detail).

Best of all is the stowage space it saves. Mrs Bomb doesn't travel light, and my toothbrush and a spare pair of undergarments usually reside in the glove compartment. You get the drift.

Brian, the surrey ones I have seen do not look taught enough with some sag in material, just looks odd, the flaps covering the top of the windows are not the most attractive. Some owners wished they had gone split for their own reasons. Having seen the `Mk1` S and D split I feel it a nicer job. Don`t get me wrong the surrey is a good solution, personally I am just waiting for the latest split design.
