I have a feeling I may have lost my garage door opener widget, possibly down where the handbrake lever pops out from the trim! How much of a job is it to get access and remove it?

You can raise the centre trim ('whale tail') after removing two fixings at the back end. To remove it completely you'll need to slacken the handbrake cable enough to enable the lever to be raised vertically.

Thanks DM. Are the fixings obvious to the naked eye? I've had a peruse of the Bible, of which there appears no mention.

Thanks again. smile

They're not obvious just looking in the car. You need to pull the seats forward and look/feel under the tail where it runs across the parcel shelf. There's a bracket on each side of the car. Easy enough to undo the bolts once you found them

How big a job would it be to completely remove the centre consol cover? Is it simple plug to disconnect once whale tail is free?

From memory; once you've removed the bolts at the back you need to slacken the handbrake cable (adjuster near the diff) so you can pull the handle pretty much vertical. Unscrew the gearknob and then lift the rear of the console up. This lets is slide out from under the heater control panel and then you can lift it off the gear stick and handbrake lever.

That's as fas I got - you would still need to disconnect the door release cables to completely remove it; I just needed to move it out of the way.

Not sure what it takes to remove the bolsters on the tunnel I'm afraid

The bolsters sit over the tunnel like a saddle and just lift off once the whale tail is lifted.
