Just checking before I buy:

Will a set of standard shocks from a 500 be a straight replacement on a precat 400?

Cheers
Richard

Depends how fussed you are about originality. Pre-cats should have Konis whilst the 500s have Bilsteins.

That said, as far as I know the two sets are interchangable.

I have been looking into this recently, I intend to go down the Bilstein and Eibach spring route. I have had conversations with a supplier (Blackdown Automotive) who have TVR experience (guy designed and set up suspension systems for TVR factory) and are marketing sets for the TVR range. You may need to have any front shocks adjusted in length slightly (done by circlip movement in another groove set) for use on the front of pre-cats! I will have this done for my 4.3. What has triggered the height scenario is the fact I have realised recently that the front of my pre-cat is about 40mm higher than most others! It has at some point been fitted with new shocks at the front (GAZ) a few years back. I was advised by Ben at Blackdown that they most probably are for a later 500? So he suggested setting the new front Bilsteins up for me a notch lower (inside on the build). So look into the setup you are after before purchase. Regards, Pete

Actually, all Tivs are 14" open on the fronts from Chimmys to Sags so I would just wind down the spring seats before I started spending beer tokens on other shocks.

With all due respect, that's not a particularly good recommendation - unless his specs were down-graded by the factory, which is always possible.
