most important is to start with the roof the right way round as described. To make life easier, chuck the spare in the garage - would you really consider driving anywhere with that on?? Especially considering the tyre is close to 20 years old!!
In all honesty, you're very unlikely to find a garage nowadays carrying stock of tyres that would fit the Grif (especially 15" fronts). Best to plan for a trip home on the back of an AA/RAC truck in relation to any tyre related problem.
