As some of you know already, my pre-cat has a later '5ltr' front end.

Yet I have the pre-cat air intake setup of a pipe from the AFM (smooth bore variety now) down to a bracket above the radiator and on the other side of this bracket fits a round air filter (now of the K&N variety)

The later cars have a box above the rad I believe and a squate/flat air filter.

I'm wondering if it would improve the breathing of my car if I changed to the later setup.

Anyone want to speculate?

And does anyone have a picture of the way things fix down there, in case I don't actually have room after all.

Been reading up on this myself recently as the position of the pre cat filter isnt the best. Pretty sure i read somewhere that the 500 arrangement is even worse for air flow tho.

I took the cover/surround away from my pre cat air filter recently as it fitted so close to the filter that i`m sure it will have been obstructive. The hole in the body beneath the filter where supposedly cool air should be drawn from was so small it wasnt worth bothering with. If you also look at the location of this filter breathing hole in relation to where air comes into the nose, it aint great for getting air to the filter. So for now i have done away with the surround and really opened up the hole beneath the filter. Hopefully it will now flow some air.

Ideally i want the filter out of the engine bay and infront of the rad where it can draw nice cool air in plentiful supply. Jools stated hes seen a few good designs that worked where the intake went into the passenger side wing and exited at the front where the fan motor is.

Try and find the thread with Ants old Griff, an interesting design that worked.

Going back to your original question tho, i dont think the 500 arrangement is the best for flow from what i have read. Probably best sticking with what you`ve got.

Ant.

The deflector cover for the precat filter attempts to shield hot air from the airfilter.
Some early 500s also had the precat filter setup,so it depends what kind of 500 front end is fitted Ian.
I would say if you have the type that can have the later 500 type panel filter , then do it. You should then only get cooler air coming through.
However you may have to change your smooth bore pipe too.

Deflector cover?

Mine has nothing like this. It's just a round filter on the end of the bracket. So half the filter is almost certainly breathing what has already been through the rad.

I assumed this was normal for a pre-cat

Basically, I have this kit with a small metal bracket to connect the end of the hose to the filter

ive seen a shaped fibreglass deflector that attempts to keep the rad air off the filter. curved, and approx 10 inches by 6 inches

Yes , as Steve says there should be a grp filter shroud fitted aswell.
When moving you can hope that the fresh air infront of the rad is feeding the filter. But the 500 panel filter set up isolates it....

Shield. Jus,t for future reference.
By odd coincidence I'd found the ACT version In Google Images when I searched, only I didn't know that's what it was.

I can feel some fabrication coming on.

Thanks for your help guys. I never knew I had a bit missing!
