Is there anyone near Colchester willing/able to give me an educated ear to tell me what I'm 95% sure I already know?

And confirm my suspicious nature that if my cam has expired it should have been picked up when I told the garage I bought the thing from what symptoms I had.

Or at least when the serviced it and checked the clearances a couple of weeks ago.

fked off does not even come close.

When mine went it sounded like a tapping noise from cam cover. Similar to exhaust leak on back cylinder.

They dont usually check the valve clearances on a service as these engines have hydraulic tappets

Only way to check cam is remove cam covers and spark plugs , turn engine over manually using spanner on crankshaft bolt. Watch each rocker as it turns over , they should all move the same amount. When i done this exhaust rocker on number 7 cylinder didnt move , cam lobe was completely rounded off.

Was told that some cams fitted by tvr where not case hardened properly and wear down. Mine had done 32k from new..

Also if car has been sitting for some time, oil drains off cam and lobes go rusty, when you start using car again they simply grind themselves down. Mine had been sitting in a garage for 6 years so most likely the cause.

Hope this helps

Alex
