Rev counter sticks at the same RPM when engine is turned off

When I turn the engine off, the rev counter needle stays at the same rpm as when the key was turned to off, even when the key is removed. It sticks at the same place until the ignition is turned back on again at which point it goes to zero. Not sure if this is a problem or not. Has anyone seen this before?

My pre-cat does this occasionally, usually a pre-cursor to the battery needing a charge.

Mine also does this maybe 50% of the time. No idea why.

I am feeling better already. It does sound like this is a pre-cat thing, judging by those who have posted.

My Griff has always done it, so I never worry. It is a talking point sometimes so quite a novelty!

Mines done the same for the 12 years Ive owned the car, didnot make a difference when fitted new battery!

As far as I know, all the cars with the 'upside down' dials do it. I've had three cars with that style and they have all done it. One of them was owned from new. It seems it either needs power or gravity to drop to zero.

Mine too

Sometimes if you turn the ignition to position 2 it will reset back to zero (ish)!

So its a pre-cat and a pre-serp thing, which makes sense as the early 500s had the same clocks as the pre-cats.
