It's only recently I learned the meaning of this phrase - and now I'm paying the price for too many failed doughnuts and poorly controlled sideways moments ! Me' fuel tank baffle - whatever that is - has come loose !

Has any-one ever had this ? I thought it was suspension trouble at first 'cos it manifests itself as a "slight clonk" on turn in.

If so - is there anything that can be done - apart from replacing the tank ? Can it be "fished out" if it comes off completely ...?

Are you sure?
In the biking world it means something entirely different. And from what i know,it is where the phrase originated.

Must admit, I thought a tank slapper was getting it seriously sideways and then fish tailing it either side.

Back to the original question - Yes, I have the same problem and have lived with the problem for years. The baffle is completely detached on my 92 Griff. I reckon the solution is to either replace the tank or remove it, thoroughly ventilate, gas cut an access hole , weld the baffle back to the tank walls then patch weld over the access hole and replace tank. Might not be worth all the hastle if a replacement tank is a reasonable price, anyone know how much for one?

The term is from biking where a bike wiggles it's handle bars violently from side to side "slapping the tank", normally under extreme acceleration, and is pretty dodgy and not so common on modern bikes (more from the 70's and early 80's when bike chassis' could not control the power of the bike). Although some modern big sports bikes are prone to it if not fitted with a steering damper.

It is also now used for cars when you get a violent fishtail and are having to steer lock to lock to try and control it.
