Really appreciate some help with this. I have a 96 500. Sometimes when warm, say after a brief stop, it wont start without a very long turnover. The car primes, can hear fuel pump, turns over, but takes ages to actually start. I have a replacement alarm from Carl fitted 8years ago and the car is mapped and chipped by Mark adams.
Have replace fuel pump, regulator, and lots other other bits in last year. Has new coil plugs leads, ignition module etc. Once started she runs like a dream. Sometimes if I turn of ignition and on again this on second attempt does the trick. Any ideas?

Check the ignition, pump relays if fitted? Sometimes they can stick. Best of luck.

Had a faulty coil on mine which gave similar symptoms - until it failed while driving. It gave a spark at the plugs but too weak to fire......
Cheap to replace though. Does the starter spin the engine over fast enough? If not it could point to a poor electrical connection with the feed or earth.
Good luck!

Thanks for that. Has brand new coil and ignition pack. Spins over fine just doesn't fire sometimes!

I thought the hot start issue this kit fixes solved no power getting to the starter? My starter is turning over fine?

The hot start kit does indeed address issues with the starter motor. Sorry I don't have any suggestions what might be causing your issues

All new plugs leads and extenders. Have suspected stepper, especially as car usually starts straight away after 2nd turn of the key, however have replaced with new as well. Wondering if it's just a dodgy signal somewhere but don't know where to look. Will swap all the relays when I get home for new as well.

Apparently there are some dodgy stepper motors out there so it is possible that that could still be the issue. Could be worth borrowing another from a friend and seeing if that sorts anything.

As a way of testing if it is the stepper, just disconnect it before you switch the engine off and when the engine is warm and idling nicely.

What symptoms do I then look for?

My line of thinking was, IF its a stepper problem, that means it will be letting in too much or too little air and affecting the mixture one way or the other which may be enough to cause your starting issue. Disconnecting when its idling nicely should have the stepper in the right position for an ok start when still warm. My thinking may be totally off mark but its only a few seconds to undo so worth a try seen as you have replaced everything else.

Will give it a try... Thanks

Interestingly after reading another post I simply cleaned the Ignition module in the fuse box not the one in the spaghetti wiring. Did a run with club yesterday at 6am, yes 6am us Bristol boys are nuts, and enjoyed sunshine 250 miles and a car that had no trouble starting. Have ordered a replacement relay just in case (only £7) it is dodgy.

I'm very confused. I only have one ignition module and that's between the dizzy and the coil. Did you mean a relay, somewhere? Thanks.

Sorry you have every right to be confused, I meant ignition relay not ignition module.... Had a little to much lemonade when I posted!

Thanks. Also try Servisol super 10 or Halfords Electrical contact cleaner. Should help. 10 year old contacts are getting some what mucky! Have treated my ECU, AFM and relay conmtacts with the same.
