Greetings everybody. Having recently bought my beautiful 1994 Griff 500, I set about trying to figure out what all of these buttons do. Pretty much sorted it all out except for a tiny red light, to the left upper side of the drivers electric window switch. Have the owners manual, but it doesn't seem to refer to it. Any ideas please

Think that's your ice sensor. Should be green, turns red when cold or sensor fails. Sensor is usually found either behind fronr number plate amongst the wiring or in the nears side wing behind headland.

Yes it's your ice sensor, if it's in the open state it's always showing red (cold) which suggests it's failed. Your options are to change it or cut the failed one off and wind the wires together which will close the circuit and turn the light off.

Greetings, I'm new too, and also have bought this summer a 1994 Griffith 500HC. Guess what, the ice warning light is usually on glowing red! I've found the sensor, it's a little blue disc, and replacements are available apparently, but will changing the sensor put it right or is it something else?

My ice sensor is always showing red - but basically so what. I'm not planning on using it in that sort of weather so I don't see the reason to fix it.

Thanks for the input. Convinced its a faulty ice warning light and will look at changing blue disc thingy. Personally I'd like the car right and have an issue with red lights, Unless in Amsterdam

Greetings from East Yorkshire. I splashed out on a new thermistor sensor from racetechdirect, the disc type on my car, and fitted it yesterday. Bingo. Well, it goes yellow, then red, then out on start up, so just need some cold weather now to see if it responds as indicated in the handbook.
Not a big job, it was secured up behind the near side headlight but accessible from under the car, and by cutting its cable tie it dropped down enough for me to replace it. A bit of contortionism with a soldering iron, but at £4.65+vat and postage, worth the trouble in my eyes. Good luck with yours if you follow suit.

Should it go out on start-up? Doesn't seem right. Interesting that the price was OK as I was sure I'd seen the part at about £40 which is one of the reasons why I wasn't bothered about fixing mine - at that price maybe I'll reconsider.

According to my handbook, after it starts up as previously described, it glows green at 5degrees, then yellow at 2deg., and red if the ambient temperature drops to zero. As it has been about 10deg today, it is unlit after it's initial start up. I'm sure I won't have to wait too long for lower temperatures here in Yorkshire, but I'm not planning to get up at 4a.m. or dip the sensor in an ice bucket in the meantime just to see if it works as described! Best wishes, docmooro.

Thanks for the help guys. This brings me onto what could be an new topic. If I'm to go looking for this detector, which sounds like it could be anywhere other than the exhaust manifold, I'm gonna need the appropriate tools. Time for me to buy a 1tonne jack me thinks.

Regards

It's usually hanging down in the front N/S wing just behind the grill.

Welcome to pistonheads Docmooro, I hope you aren't worrying those Bubwith Parishioners with your early morning noises.

Mine's been busted since about 2 years after I bought the car so I've forgotten about it. Might try fixing it. Can anyone post up a photo of what I/we should be looking for up under the nearside headlamp?

The thermistor is a small flat disc with 2 wires coming out of it; there is a picture on the Racetechdirect website - search for M0521 (which is the TVR part no).
