I had to re-seat one of my headlamp fairings so thought while I have everything out I would replace the bulbs. I know the main bulb is a single filament and I would like to use one of the newer bulb generations like a Philips X-treme H7 but from what I see the bulb mounting looks very different. Any advice would be appreciated for a higher powered halogen replacement

You may find this suppliers site of interest. No connection but have dealt with them in the past and they were OK:

I can't help with the actual bulb needed but I would certainly recommend Philips Xtreme over Osram Nightbreakers.

I don't think either is better than the other in terms of lighting up the road (if one is better than the other, it's negligible, both are much better than standard). The reason I would recommend the Philips is because in my experience, the Philips outlive the Nightbreakers by at least double if not treble. Changing these bulbs can be a pain so if one lasts longer than the other, it gets my vote.

Good luck.

I agree .... From the stuff I've read Philips Xtreme seeems to be top of the list at the moment. After a bit more research I believe I need H1 type bulbs. This form factor doesn't have the large mountings that the others have. Hope I am right on this 'cause I have just done a buy-it-now on ebay for a pair - good price though.

The very latest OSRAM Night Breaker Unlimited is rated at 110% over standard bulbs and are meant to give you an extra 5 meters of vision over the Phillips 100% bulbs.

I've not tried them as I only discovered their existence the day after I fitted a set of Phillips X-Treme 100% H4's to my Chimaera.

These in themselves are an upgrade to the excellent Phillips X-Treme 80% ones I was using before, which were a huge step up from standard bulbs, but I did lose a dip beam filament after two years.

I do think these new breed of super bright bulbs are excellent performers giving out noticeably more light, but by all accounts and from my experience they don't seem to last as long before blowing.

To be honest the longevity issue is a small price to pay for far safer night driving.

Next time I'll try the very latest 110% OSRAM Night Breaker Unlimited version, with the new reflectors I'm fitting soon they should give the best night vision this side of an HID set up, with none of their disadvantages.

Thanks for the advice. Whilst on the lights subject - any useful upgrades for Griff driving lights? As these are not sitting in a light pod they seem to be much more easily replaced. The reflectors on mine are getting past it so wondering if there is a better plug and play replacement?

The early night breakers did have a shorter life, but the night breaker plus and unlimited was revised to overcome this. Good prices on Amazon of all places.

You may fail you next MOT if you fit HID bulbs, they have tightened the guide lines recently.

Looked at the bulbs SILICONEKID343HP is suggesting. Apart from the HID legality at MOT time these are H7 bulbs... so there's no way these will fit into the standard light unit - they take single filament capless bulbs. Anyway back to my original question - my reflectors are shot and I really want to replace the driving lights with something more modern that will give a bigger light output and look about the same as the OE. That rules out Angel Eyes and projectors (if only ...) but what about BMW E43/46 lights - do they fit?

That was an example ,they do the correct fitting for these cars .

If you have the light pods out the there are a couple of options.

You can change the pods to house a 7" lamp like the SE Griffiths which by all accounts is a vast improvement. Sportmotive can supply the pods

There is also an option to upgrade to a Tuscan style light which fits behind the cover which means you can use projector style lamps. Not sure who supplies these.

Personally I think the 7" option is the best one
