Changed the gearbox oil today. Bought 2 litres of ATF thinking this would be more than enough. It took 2.5 litres. The bible says 2.5 pints, the handbook says 1.4 litres. I didn't miss when filling! Anyone else had this?

It's 2.5 litres. Fill until it starts to come out. In the book they meant to say litres but said pints instead. Simple mistake to make really. Could happen to any of us.

Yes. The books are wrong. As I recall they also specify incorrect capacities for the (GKN) diff too.

Confirmed, same with me. There have been one or two similar threads in the past. Pete

I've got to change my gearbox oil very soon. Is it something that can b done without a ramp (i.e. on jack-stands)?

How tricky was it to get the oil bottle up high enough to refill? I found it a real pain trying to refill the diff even with a ramp because I couldn't get the bottle high enough for it to flow in. Do you have any tips?

Tricky without a ramp or pit as the filler is half way up the rhs of the box and the car needs to be level. No room to tip the bottle up between box and chassis but I used Quinnys method of routing a tube through the engine bay to the box and fill it that way ( video was on YouTube ).
If you haven't got facilities to lift the car properly, I would recommend asking a garage to do it- a 10 minute job for them and shouldn't cost much

You can do it with the car on axle stands, but you'll need 4 to keep it level - you have to keep filling until the oil just trickles out of the filler.

You can fill it using a syphon pump similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Syphon-Pump-Petrol-Diese....

Make sure that you can remove the filler plug before you drain the old oil!

May be not the quickest way but after you've got as much oil in as you can by squeezing the bottle, empty the remainder into a squirty oil can and pump it in wink

Try one of these to get the oil in (Sealey also do a similar oil dispenser)

As for doing this without ramps, I think it would be a real pain in the acensorede. You could put the car on four axle stands to keep it level. Good luck, Pete
