Took the Griff 500 out for the weekend and noticed that under heavy acceleration at around 4K revs I'm getting what sounds like quite heavy pinking (that tinkling sound you get). doesn't really do it below 4K and on a lighter throttle doesn't seem to do it above 4K either (not that I often go over 4K at a lighter throttle tbh).

What typically causes this and what do I need to do about it?

Oh and I'd filled it with 97RON from Tescos which maybe a problem??

If it is pinking, check the ignition timing isnt too far advanced. If your engine is prone to pinking the higher the fuel octane the better. I cant see Tesco fuel being an issue, it all comes from the same refineries.

Might be the start of manifold gaskets as well. Just a thought .

One diagnostic answer is a rolling road with an AFR meter.
Mine ran horribly lean when I got it back from an engine change, seemed gutless over 4500 rpm. Turned out the AFR (air fuel ratio) which is normally around 12-14 was hitting 20. Remapped, sorted.

Another is to go see your TVR expert.

Mine is prone to pinking and so I use an Octane booster which solves the problem.

Don't risk much driving under load.

My old 5.0 was running a bit advanced and started pinking on a hot day at Shakespeare raceway.

The upshot was 2 broken pistons, they are very thin and weak over the top ring.

Agreed on the ignition timing but regarding fuel, this goes against what Dom at TVR Power said to me after fitting my new Taraka. He recommended staying well away from the Supermarket fuel.

You hear people say this but why, where`s the proof its inferior ?. I`m sure Tesco dont order their own blend. It all comes from the same place.

It's also 99 RON, and one assumes that someone somewhere is verifying that. 97 RON most other places. A couple of extra RONs, at Tescos price, does encourage me.

You hear all sorts on the internet and have to pick what you believe, just passing on possibly useful info...
